Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Strainer
  • Double Old Fashioned Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

  • Fill your glass with crushed ice and garnish your drink with a mint sprig.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Mezcal: If you don't have Mezcal on hand, you can use tequila as a substitute. It won't have the same smoky flavor, but it will still work well in this cocktail.
  • Jamaican Rum: Any full-bodied rum can be used instead of Jamaican rum if necessary.
  • Orgeat Syrup: If you can't find orgeat syrup, you can make your own by simmering equal parts sugar and water with some almond extract and orange flower water.
  • Orange Curacao: Triple sec or another orange liqueur can be used as a substitute for dry curacao.

Making a Pitcher of Tia Mia:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of Mezcal, 8 oz of Jamaican rum, 4 oz of orgeat syrup, 4 oz of lime juice, and 4 2 oz of orange curacao.
  • Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into individual glasses and fill them up with crushed ice, garnish with a mint sprig, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Mezcal Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic alternative smoky beverage or prepare a smoked tea as a substitute for Mezcal.
  • Jamaican Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic rum substitute or make a simple syrup infused with molasses.
  • Orange curacao: use an orange-flavored syrup instead.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Orgeat Syrup: Traditional orgeat syrup is naturally vegan and made with almonds. However, some commercial brands may contain honey or other animal-derived sweeteners. Check the label or make your own to ensure it's vegan-friendly.
  • Garnish: The cherry and mint sprig garnish is already vegan. Just be sure any other garnishes you want to add are also free from animal products.

What is a Tia Mia?

A Tia Mia is a cocktail made of dark Jamaican rum, Mezcal, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and curaçao. This tropical drink is a variant of the well-known Mai Tai cocktail. Ivy Mix, co-owner of Leyenda Brooklyn Coctelería, created it. What makes this drink interesting is its blend of mezcal and rum, giving it a unique flavor depth. Adding Mezcal adds a smoky note that distinguishes it from other tropical cocktails.

What is a Tia Mia made of – The ingredients

For the creation of a Tia Mia, you require these ingredients:

  • Mezcal: A distilled alcoholic beverage from Mexico, Mezcal adds a smoky flavor to the Tia Mia cocktail.
  • Jamaican Rum: This ingredient contributes a rich and funky flavor, enhancing the overall taste of the drink.
  • Lime Juice: Lime juice brings a tangy freshness, balancing out the sweetness and smokiness of the other ingredients.
  • Orgeat Syrup: A sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar, and rose or orange flower water. It adds a subtle nutty sweetness to the cocktail.
  • Orange Curacao: A type of orange liqueur, that contributes a bittersweet orange flavor that complements the other ingredients.
  • Mint Sprig: Used as a garnish, it adds an aromatic finish to the Tia Mia cocktail.

History and Origin of the Tia Mia

Ivy Mix, a famous bartender and co-owner of Leyenda, a well-liked cocktail bar in Brooklyn, created the Tia Mia cocktail. This happened in 2010 when she worked with Julie Reiner, owner of the famous Clover club in Brooklyn.

She made her version of the Mai Tai cocktail, born in 1944 at Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California. Victor J. Bergeron mixed rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and orange curacao to create this Polynesian-style drink.

Ivy took these ingredients and added Mezcal instead of some of the rum. The sweet taste of rum and the smoky flavor of Mezcal made for a unique and balanced drink.

She called it “Tia Mia,” which means “my aunt” in Spanish. This name is a fun way to remember the Mai Tai inspiration and shows the Latin American influence through Mezcal.
