Ingredients

  • 2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1 oz lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 dash Angostura aromatic bitters
  • Crushed ice
  • Pineapple slice and a cherry, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball or Collins Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Swizzle stick or Bar Spoon
  • Metal straw

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In your glass, add 1 dash Angostura aromatic bitters, and pour 1 oz orange juice, 1 oz lime juice, 1 oz pineapple juice, and 2 oz Dark Rum.
  • Mix: Add crushed ice to the glass and churn energetically with a swizzle stick or a bar spoon. Then, top up your glass with more crushed ice.
  • Garnish: Add a straw and embellish your drink with a slice of pineapple and a cherry.

Notes

Substitutes:

Sometimes, I like to experiment with the ingredients to change the drink's profile or just use what I have on hand. For the rum, I can use a blend of different rums to play around with flavors and aromas. And if I'm out of Angostura bitters, I'll sometimes use orange bitters for a sweeter citrus note.

Making a Pitcher of Rum Swizzle:

  • Scale: For a get-together, I often multiply the recipe by 8 for a larger batch. That's 16 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of lime juice, 8 oz of pineapple juice, 8 oz of orange juice, and a few dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Mix: I combine all these in a pitcher and stir thoroughly, then refrigerate it for an hour before guests arrive.
  • Serve: I serve it in individual glasses filled with ice, garnished with pineapple slices and cherries.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

I use non-alcoholic dark rum substitutes for a non-alcoholic version (they've come a long way in mimicking the flavor!).

Making it Vegan:

Luckily, the Rum Swizzle is typically vegan, but I always check the labels on my juices to ensure no added animal products. I ensure the maraschino cherries are vegan for the garnish because some brands use non-vegan dyes.

What is a Rum Swizzle?

A Rum Swizzle is a blend of dark rum, fresh juices, sweetness, and spice, often from bitters. The cocktail’s fame hails from Bermuda, making it an island staple where it’s affectionately dubbed “Bermuda’s national drink.” Its name, “Swizzle,” comes from the traditional method of mixing the ingredients with a swizzle stick, though any bar spoon or long stick can do the job nowadays.

What is in a Rum Swizzle – The ingredients

To prepare a Rum Swizzle, get these ingredients:

  • Dark Rum: Provides the robust, rich base for the cocktail’s characteristic warmth and depth.
  • Lime Juice: Adds a citrusy zing that balances the drink’s sweetness and enhances its refreshing quality.
  • Pineapple Juice: Contributes a tropical flair and natural sweetness that underscores the cocktail’s island origins.
  • Orange Juice: Infuses the drink with a bright, fruity note that complements the tropical theme.
  • Angostura Bitters: Just a dash adds a layer of aromatic depth and offsets the sweetness of the other ingredients, rounding out the cocktail’s flavor profile.
  • Ice: Chills and slightly dilutes the mixture for a refreshing sipping experience.
  • Garnish (Pineapple slice and Cherry): Enhances the visual appeal and adds a hint of extra fruity sweetness when nibbled between sips.

Best Rum for Rum Swizzle

While the original recipe calls for a robust dark rum, there’s room for flexibility depending on your palate. Goslings Black Seal, a deep, rich rum from Bermuda, stands as a traditional favorite. Its butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel notes bring a warmth that balances beautifully with the cocktail’s citrus elements. For a slightly lighter option, consider Mount Gay Eclipse from Barbados, known for its bright, fruity profile and subtle smokiness that adds complexity to your Rum Swizzle. If you’re after something more versatile, Appleton Estate Reserve Blend from Jamaica offers a mix of bold and sweet, with hints of spice and dried fruit that enrich the drink’s character. But pay attention to El Dorado 12-Year-Old from Guyana; its tropical fruit flavors, underscored by the warmth of oak, add an unexpected twist. My top pick? Go with Goslings for an authentic, traditional taste that takes you straight to the shores of Bermuda.

Cocktail Recipe Variations of the Rum Swizzle

Want to have a change from the original? Try a variation from our curated selection:

  • Maracuya Mistress: A vibrant mix of Rhum agricole, passion fruit juice, hibiscus syrup, and fresh lime juice.
  • Green Swizzle: Absinthe or green Chartreuse gives this its vibrant green color, creating a visually striking appearance. The combination of herbal spirits with lime and mint results in a refreshingly invigorating taste. Personally, I’m drawn to its herbal complexity; it’s like a delightful journey through a fragrant garden.
  • Chartreuse Swizzle: French liqueur Chartreuse, made with 130 herbs, plants, and flowers, is the star here. Its herbal, slightly sweet profile blends perfectly with citrus and pineapple for a complex, intriguing taste. The dance of herbal notes with tropical flavors particularly captivates me.
  • Bourbon Swizzle: Using bourbon as the base, this offers a warm, rich experience. Bourbon’s vanilla and caramel notes mix with citrus and sugar for a smooth, comforting sip. Added bitters provide depth, appealing to those who love a whiskey-forward taste.
  • Queen’s Park Swizzle: Hailing from Trinidad, this minty, refreshing option features Demerara rum for a rich, caramel-like sweetness. Mint, lime, and bitters combine to create a harmonious balance, making it both invigorating and soothing.
  • Twenty Seventy Swizzle: A modern concoction, this combines overproof rum with lime, falernum, and various bitters for a complex flavor profile. Its potent, spicy, tangy edge is bold and alluring, offering a unique tasting experience.
  • 151 Swizzle: Known for its strength from 151-proof rum, this balances the high alcohol content with lime, sugar, and spices like cinnamon and anise. The resulting spice and heat make it a robust, fiery choice, perfect for those who enjoy a stronger kick.

History and Origins of the Rum Swizzle

The Rum Swizzle boasts a rich history deeply rooted in the Caribbean’s culture and, more specifically, in Bermuda. Its journey began in the late 18th or early 19th century, though the exact date still needs to be determined. The cocktail gained fame primarily due to its association with Bermuda’s Swizzle Inn, which claims the title of the oldest pub on the island. The establishment’s slogan, “Swizzle Inn, Swagger Out,” aptly describes the drink’s potency and its effect on patrons.

The drink’s name, “Swizzle,” originates from the method used for its preparation, involving a “swizzle stick,” traditionally a stem cut from a native Caribbean plant known as the Quararibea Turbinata, or Swizzle stick tree. With its naturally forked shape, bartenders would use this stick to vigorously mix or “swizzle” the ingredients together, creating a frothy top and perfectly blended flavors.

Rum, a staple in the Caribbean due to the prevalent sugar cane cultivation, forms the base of this iconic drink. The cocktail’s popularity surged because of its refreshing taste and rum’s abundance and affordability in the region. The Rum Swizzle became synonymous with social gatherings and communal bonding, often prepared in large batches and served in punch bowls, further solidifying its status as a communal drink.

As tourism in Bermuda and the wider Caribbean grew, so did the Rum Swizzle’s fame. Tourists would often take the recipe back home, introducing it to new audiences and spreading its popularity far beyond the Caribbean shores.
