Notes

Substitutes:

Sometimes, I like to experiment with the ingredients to change the drink's profile or just use what I have on hand. For the rum, I can use a blend of different rums to play around with flavors and aromas. And if I'm out of Angostura bitters, I'll sometimes use orange bitters for a sweeter citrus note.

Making a Pitcher of Rum Swizzle:

  • Scale: For a get-together, I often multiply the recipe by 8 for a larger batch. That's 16 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of lime juice, 8 oz of pineapple juice, 8 oz of orange juice, and a few dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Mix: I combine all these in a pitcher and stir thoroughly, then refrigerate it for an hour before guests arrive.
  • Serve: I serve it in individual glasses filled with ice, garnished with pineapple slices and cherries.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

I use non-alcoholic dark rum substitutes for a non-alcoholic version (they've come a long way in mimicking the flavor!).

Making it Vegan:

Luckily, the Rum Swizzle is typically vegan, but I always check the labels on my juices to ensure no added animal products. I ensure the maraschino cherries are vegan for the garnish because some brands use non-vegan dyes.
