Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz agave syrup
  • ½ oz Triple Sec, optional
  • Soda water, to top up. If available, Topo Chico is the best option.
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Lime Juice: Squeeze in 1 oz fresh lime juice.
  • Add Agave Syrup: Mesure out and pour ½ oz agave syrup in the glass.
  • Add Tequila: Pour 2 oz Tequila over the ice.
  • Optional: for a fruitier and slightly stronger drink, add ½ oz Triple Sec to the mix.
  • Top Up: Top up the glass with Topo Chico mineral water (or any other brand if not available).
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Garnish: Place a lime wedge on the rim of the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you don't have Tequila, you can use vodka as a substitute. It won't have the same flavor profile but will still make a refreshing drink.
  • Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice can work in a pinch if fresh limes aren't available. However, if possible, I always recommend fresh for the best flavor.
  • Topo Chico: Any sparkling mineral water can be used if Topo Chico isn't available. Perrier is a good match for example. Just ensure it's unsweetened and unflavored to keep the integrity of the cocktail.

Making a Pitcher of Ranch Water:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Tequila, 8 oz of lime juice, and enough soda water to top up each glass.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the lime juice, agave syrup, and Tequila. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, top up with Topo Chico, garnish with a lime wedge, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available and do a good job mimicking Tequila's flavor.

Making it Vegan:

This cocktail is already vegan-friendly. Just use a vegan-friendly tequila brand (most are, but it's always good to check).

What is a Ranch Water?

Ranch Water is a tequila-based cocktail made of lime juice, Tequila, agave syrup, and Topo Chico mineral water. This refreshing drink is not difficult to make as it only requires four simple ingredients and no special equipment or techniques. The flavor profile is close to the one of a Tommy’s Margarita.

What is a Ranch Water made of – The ingredients

The following ingredients are necessary for making Ranch Water:

  • Tequila: This is the base spirit of Ranch Water. It provides the cocktail with its distinctive, robust flavor.
  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a tangy citrus note to the drink, balancing out the strong taste of Tequila.
  • Agave syrup: This sweetener made from agave, the same plant used to make tequila, balances the drink and give it a rounder, long lasting texture.
  • Topo Chico: This Mexican mineral water gives Ranch Water its signature fizz and helps dilute the other ingredients, making the cocktail more refreshing and easy to drink.
  • Ice: Ice is used to chill Ranch Water, making it a perfect drink for hot summer days.

Ranch Water Variations

Want to spice up your Ranch Water? Try one of these two variations:

  • Grapefruit Ranch Water: Fresh grapefruit juice brightens up the mix of tequila and sparkling water with its vibrant tartness. The citrusy punch makes every sip refreshing and lively. I adore how the grapefruit enhances the crispness, making it exceptionally invigorating on a hot day.
  • Spicy Ranch Water: A kick of heat from jalapeño or habanero peppers spices up the simple combination of tequila and fizzy water. This spice cuts through the drink’s simplicity, leaving a warm aftertaste that lingers pleasantly.

History and Origin of the Ranch Water

Ranch Water is the unofficial cocktail of Texas, and more specifically West Texas.

If the name and idea behind can be traced back to cowboys and ranchers, who probably saw in the mix soda water, lime and tequila a good way to stay hydrated and energized all day long, this cocktail is officially a fairly recent one.

Kevin Williamson, chef and owner of the Ranch 616 restaurant in Austin, is widely credited with creating this drink (story is that he also applied for a trademark for the “Ranch Water” name). Since they opened in 1998, the drink never left the menu and quickly became a state favorite.

FAQ

How many calories are in a Ranch Water drink?
Ranch Water is a relatively low-calorie cocktail, with approximately 130-150 calories per serving. This makes it a popular choice for those who enjoy a refreshing alcoholic beverage but are also mindful of their calorie intake.
What is the alcohol content of Ranch Water?
The alcohol content of Ranch Water can vary depending on how much Tequila you use. However, typically, it has an Alcohol By Volume (ABV) of around 20% and a proof of 40. This means it's less strong than straight spirits but still packs a punch.
What type of alcohol is used in Ranch Water?
Ranch Water uses Tequila as its primary alcohol. The quality and flavor profile of the Tequila can significantly impact the overall taste of the cocktail, so it's recommended to use a good-quality silver or blanco tequila.
In what kind of glass is Ranch Water served?
Traditionally, Ranch Water is served in a highball glass. This tall, straight-sided glass allows plenty of room for ice and the sparkling water top-up, enhancing the refreshing nature of this cocktail.
What does Ranch Water taste like?
Ranch Water has a crisp, refreshing taste with a hint of citrus from the lime juice and a slight kick from the Tequila. It's light and fizzy due to the addition of sparkling water, making it an ideal drink for hot summer days.
What is the ratio of ingredients in Ranch Water?
The typical ratio for Ranch Water is 2:1:4 - two parts tequila, one part lime juice, half a part agave syrup, and four parts sparkling water. However, you can adjust these ratios to suit your taste preference.
How is Ranch Water served with ice?
Ranch Water is usually served over ice. The ice not only chills the drink but also helps to dilute the tequila and lime juice slightly, creating a more balanced and refreshing cocktail.
