Notes

Substitutes:

From my experience, here's how you can tweak the Ward Eight:
  • Rye Whiskey: If rye's spiciness isn't your preference, bourbon makes a sweeter, smoother substitute. I've even gone with Scotch for a smokier take.
  • Grenadine: Real pomegranate juice plus a bit of sugar can replace store-bought grenadine, and I love how it freshens up the taste.
  • Lemon/Orange Juice: Bottled citrus juices work in a fix, but fresh is better for a zesty punch.

Making a Pitcher of Ward Eight:

  • Scale: For 8 servings, you'd use 16 oz of whiskey, 4 oz each of lemon and orange juice, and 8 tsp of grenadine.
  • Mix: In a pitcher, combine all the ingredients over a good amount of ice. Stir them well until mixed and chilled.
  • Serve: Strain the mix into individual chilled cocktail glasses, garnish each with a cherry and an orange slice, then serve them up!

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Whiskey Substitute: Swap out the rye whiskey for a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative, or use an amber-colored tea for the body and a touch of bitter complexity.
  • Proceed As Usual: Replace the whiskey with your chosen substitute and follow the standard recipe steps for a mocktail version of the Ward Eight.

Making it Vegan:

  • Grenadine: Ensure the grenadine is vegan; some brands use animal products. Alternatively, mix pomegranate juice with a vegan sweetener to taste.
  • Maraschino Cherry: Some maraschino cherries use non-vegan dyes, so look for a brand that doesn't, or opt for a fresh cherry or another vegan-friendly garnish.

History and Origins of the Ward Eight Cocktail

The Ward Eight cocktail boasts a rich history rooted in the political scene of Boston, Massachusetts, dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century. Legend has it that the drink first appeared at the Locke-Ober restaurant, one of the oldest in Boston. A local political figure, Martin Lomasney, often called the “Czar of Ward Eight,” is central to the cocktail’s origin story.

Supporters of Lomasney, hoping to celebrate his anticipated election to the Massachusetts General Court, approached the bartender at Locke-Ober, some say the bartender was Tom Hussion and others say it was Billy Kane, with a request for a new cocktail. Wanting to honor the occasion, Hussion crafted a potent and palatable drink using rye whiskey, lemon and orange juices, and grenadine. This concoction would please the palates of Lomasney’s diverse range of supporters.

The name “Ward Eight” pays homage to the Eighth Ward, an area Lomasney controlled, known for its significant influence on local elections and its notorious voting practices. The cocktail quickly gained popularity beyond the political sphere, becoming a staple of American cocktail culture.

What is a Final Ward Cocktail?

While exploring the legacy of the Ward Eight cocktail, one cannot overlook its intriguing relative, the Final Ward. This cocktail, a creative take on the classic Last Word, features an audacious mix that replaces gin with rye whiskey and lime juice with lemon. Phil Ward, a celebrated New York City bartender, crafted this variant during his tenure at the renowned Death & Co. The cocktail’s name cleverly reflects its creator’s surname and positions it as a conclusive twist on the Last Word.A Ward Eight cocktail, shot from above, on a white marmol table with a rye whiskey bottle, an orange juice bottle, a grenadine bottle and two lemons around.
