  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz Triple Sec
  • ¼ oz Campari
  • Lemon twist, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer
  • Coupe Glass

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a coupe glass with ice. Set it aside.
  • Add Lemon Juice: Pour ¾ oz fresh lemon juice into the shaker.
  • Add Campari: Add ¼ oz Campari.
  • Add Triple Sec: Add ½ oz Triple Sec to the mix.
  • Add Gin: Finally, add 1½ oz Gin.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Discard the ice inside the coupe glass. Using both the cocktail strainer and the fine strainer, strain the mixture into the chilled glass.
  • Garnish: Express a lemon zest on top of the drink. Drop in the glass or place on the rim and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: If you don't have Gin on hand, vodka can substitute for a less botanical flavor.
  • Campari: If you prefer something other than Campari's bitterness, Aperol is a good alternative that still brings an orange essence to the drink.
  • Triple Sec: Grand Marnier can be used as a substitute for triple sec if needed. It has a similar orange flavor but is slightly sweeter and more affluent.
  • Lemon Juice: In a pinch, lime juice can be used instead of lemon juice, but it will alter the cocktail's flavor profile.

Making a Pitcher of Jasmine Cocktail:

  • To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8: 12 oz of Gin, 6 oz of lemon juice, 2 oz of Campari, and 4 oz of Triple Sec.
  • Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher with ice and stir well.
  • When ready to serve, pour the mixture into individual coupe glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic Gin's botanicals.
  • Campari Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic aperitif or make a simple syrup infused with orange peel, gentian root and rhubarb.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic triple sec. There are several brands available that mimic the orange flavor.
  • Follow the original steps using these non-alcoholic substitutes to enjoy a non-alcoholic version of the Jasmine Cocktail.

Making it Vegan:

Always check the spirit and liqueur brands, as some may use animal products in their processing methods.

What is a Jasmine Cocktail?

A Jasmine Cocktail is a gin-based sour cocktail made of Campari, Triple sec, and fresh lemon juice. This drink is relatively easy to make as it only requires four ingredients and involves simple mixing techniques. It’s not a variant of any other well-known cocktail but has its unique identity due to the perfect balance between sweet, bitter, and tart flavors. An interesting fact about this cocktail is that despite having Campari – known for its strong bitterness – as one of the main components, the final taste is well balanced.

What is a Jasmine Cocktail made of – The ingredients

For a perfect Jasmine Cocktail, use these ingredients:

  • Gin: This forms the base of the Jasmine cocktail. It’s a distilled spirit known for its botanical flavor, primarily juniper berries.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: Adds a tangy citrus note to the cocktail, balancing out the sweetness of other ingredients.
  • Triple sec: An orange-flavored liqueur that adds a sweet and fruity dimension to the drink.
  • Campari: A bitter Italian aperitif that gives the Jasmine cocktail its distinctive bitter edge and vibrant color.

History and Origin of the Jasmine Cocktail

Paul Harrington, a famous bartender and author, created the Jasmine Cocktail in the 1990s. At that time, he worked at the Townhouse Bar & Grill in Emeryville, California. He wanted to make a cocktail that would attract newcomers to cocktails while also intriguing seasoned cocktail lovers.

The Pegu Club cocktail, a classic drink from the British colonial period in Burma, inspired him. This drink also combines Gin and lemon juice with orange curaçao and Angostura bitters.

Harrington decided to play around with these ingredients. The result was a unique mix of sweet, sour, and bitter flavors.

He named his new creation after his friend’s daughter, Jasmine. The name seemed perfect for a drink as delicate and fragrant as the jasmine flower.
