Notes

Ratio:

The most classic and well-known ratio for a Godfather is equal parts Scotch and Amaretto (1:1). However, it makes for a pretty sweet drink, very forward on the Amaretto. We chose to present you with the following recipe (3:1), which offers a great balance between the Scotch and the Amaretto, but feel free to experiment with different ratios in order to find the perfect cocktail to suit your taste!

Substitutes:

  • Scotch Whisky: For this cocktail, both blended or single malt whiskies will work. If you don't have Scotch on hand, bourbon can be a good substitute, although it will give the drink a sweeter, nuttier flavor. Feel free to experiment with any brand of whisky you like!
  • Amaretto: Any kind of Amaretto, including Disaronno, will work for this recipe. If you’re out of Amaretto, you can try using almond syrup (“orgeat”) as a substitute, but be careful with the quantity: almond syrup is very strong and sweeter than Amaretto, so aim for half the quantity you would normally have used.

Making a Pitcher of Godfather Drink:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Scotch whisky and 8 oz of Amaretto.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Scotch whisky and Amaretto. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with an orange twist, and serve immediately.
  • Bartender’s Tips: you can make large quantities in advance and store it in air-tight bottles. It doesn’t have to be stored in the fridge, but it’s always a good idea to refrigerate it for a few hours before serving (this way you’ll get a perfectly chilled cocktail directly out of the bottle). As the mix only contains alcohol, it has a very long shelf life (at least a year).

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Scotch Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whisky substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic whisky's smoky flavor. If you can’t find any, you can try using the following mix: 1 part orange juice, 1 part ginger ale and 0.75 part lemon juice. Stir well to remove the bubbles from the ginger ale and use as a whisky substitute.
  • Amaretto Substitute: You can either use store-bought almond syrup, or make your own mock Amaretto by combining almond extract with simple syrup and a touch of vanilla. There are also a few alcohol-free Amaretto available on the market.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
  • Bartender’s tips: in order to make a rounder, more complex drink, you can add an egg white to the mix. This will also give your drink a smoother texture, with some foam at the top. If you’d like to try, proceed as follows:
    1. Crack an egg open and pour the white into a cocktail shaker. Discard the yolk.
    2. Add the non-alcoholic whisky (or the orange juice, ginger ale, and lemon blend) and Amaretto substitute in proportions of your liking.
    3. Add ice, close the shaker, and shake well (10-15 seconds).
    4. Open the shaker. Using a cocktail strainer, pour the liquid (not the ice) into the other part of the shaker. You should see some foam has started to form on the surface of the drink. Discard the ice.
    5. Close the shaker again and shake well (without ice this time), making ample movements (15 - 20 seconds).
    6. Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes and pour the drink inside. Take an orange zest and twist it on the drink: this way, the essences in the peel will give your cocktail a nice smell and an extra citrusy note.
    7. Enjoy!

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Your Brands: Most Scotch whiskies and Amarettos are vegan-friendly, but it's always a good idea to check your specific brands. Some alcoholic beverages use animal products in their filtration process.
  • Proceed As Usual: Once you've confirmed that your ingredients are vegan-friendly, follow the original steps to make your vegan Godfather drink.

What is a Godfather Cocktail?

A Godfather cocktail is a whiskey-based cocktail made of Scotch whisky and Amaretto. This classic drink is simple to make, requiring only two ingredients and no particular technique, making it an easy choice for those new to mixology or looking for a quick cocktail to serve.

An interesting fact about the Godfather is that its name supposedly comes from Marlon Brando’s famous role in the movie “The Godfather.” Some believe that this was his favorite drink, hence the name. However, just like many theories about the origin of cocktails, this story still needs to be confirmed.

What is a Godfather Cocktail made of – The ingredients

These are the ingredients you need to mix up a Godfather Cocktail:

  • Scotch Whisky: This forms the base of the Godfather cocktail. It provides a rich, complex flavor that sets the tone for the entire drink.
  • Amaretto: This sweet, almond-flavored Italian liqueur balances out the strong taste of the whisky. It adds a layer of complexity and sweetness to the cocktail.
  • Ice Cubes: These are used to chill the drink without diluting it too much. They help to mellow out the flavors and make the cocktail more enjoyable.
  • Orange Peel (Optional): This can be used as a garnish. It adds a hint of citrus aroma that complements the other flavors in the drink.

Godfather Cocktail Variations

  • The Black Godfather: Introduces peated Scotch for a smoky flair, enhancing the sweet undertones of amaretto. I appreciate the bold yet balanced flavors in this mix; it’s uniquely satisfying.
  • Godmother: Uses vodka instead of whiskey, offering a smoother and lighter experience. It’s refreshingly simple yet elegant.
  • The Holy Father: Incorporates herbal liqueur, adding depth with complex herbal notes. I enjoy the refreshing twist this brings; it feels both sophisticated and invigorating.
  • The Irish Godfather: Features Irish whiskey for its notably smooth and mellow qualities, making it exceptionally pleasant to sip.

History and Origin of the Godfather Cocktail

The Godfather cocktail, a drink that mixes Scotch whisky and Amaretto liqueur, first came into the picture in the 1970s. It was created alongside two other drinks called the “Godmother” (vodka & amaretto) and the “Godchild” (brandy & amaretto).

The drink’s name most definitely comes from Mario Puzo “The Godfather” novel, published in 1969 and later adapted as a film trilogy by Francis Ford Coppola. The first movie came out in 1972 and quickly became very popular, becoming the highest-grossing release of the year.

Some people also say that the drink got its name from Marlon Brando, the actor who played Don Vito Corleone in “The Godfather.” They say Brando liked this cocktail dearly, so they named it after him.

FAQ

How many calories does a Godfather Cocktail contain?
A standard version typically contains 2 ounces of Scotch whisky and 0.75 ounces of Amaretto, with approximately 180 calories. However, the exact calorie count can vary depending on the specific brands of alcohol used.
How potent is a Godfather cocktail?
The strength depends on the ratio of Scotch whisky to Amaretto. A typical recipe with a 3:1 ratio will yield a drink with an Alcohol By Volume (ABV) of around 30% and a proof of approximately 60. This makes it a strong cocktail.
What type of alcohol is used in a Godfather Cocktail?
A classic version uses two types of alcohol: Scotch whisky and Amaretto, an Italian almond-flavored liqueur.
In what type of glass is a Godfather Cocktail served?
The cocktail is traditionally served in an old-fashioned or larger rocks glass.
What does a Godfather Cocktail taste like?
The taste profile is rich and complex, with the smoky, flavor of Scotch whisky complemented by the sweet, nutty notes of Amaretto. The result is a balanced drink that's both warming and slightly sweet.
What is the ratio of Scotch to Amaretto in a Godfather Cocktail?
The standard and “historical” ratio is equal parts Scotch whisky and Amaretto. However, as this version of the drink is very sweet, we recommend trying a 3:1 ratio (3 parts of whisky for 1 part of amaretto). Of course, you are more than welcome to adjust this ratio to suit your taste preferences!
How is a Godfather drink served in terms of ice and presentation?
