  • Club soda or sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel or wedge, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your Highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Lime Juice: Squeeze in ½ oz fresh lime juice.
  • Add Gin: Pour 2 oz Gin into the glass.
  • Top with Sparkling Water: Fill the rest of the glass with club soda or sparkling water.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir gently the ingredients together.
  • Garnish: Drop a lime wheel or wedge into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: I often use vodka for a neutral spirit flavor if I run out of gin. For something different, try white rum for a hint of sweetness.
  • Lime: No limes on hand? Lemons work in a pinch, offering a different but still zesty flavor.
  • Sparkling Water: Tonic water gives a slightly sweet and bitter twist, or even try ginger ale for a spicier take.

Making a Pitcher of Gin Rickey:

  • Scale: To create a pitcher serving 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That's 16 oz of gin and 2 oz of fresh lime juice.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the gin and lime juice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, top each with sparkling water, garnish with a lime wheel or wedge, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin alternative; several are on the market that capture the essence of gin without the alcohol.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular gin and follow the initial steps to enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

Luckily, the classic version is inherently vegan! Just ensure any substitutes or additional ingredients you add are also vegan-friendly.

What is a Gin Rickey?

Gin Rickey is a gin-based drink combined with lime juice and sparkling water. Many argue that its popularity soared due to its refreshing and straightforward character. Historians trace its origin to Washington, D.C., where the drink was a favorite among politicians and socialites.

What is a Gin Rickey made of – The ingredients

Before you start making your Gin Rickey, collect these ingredients:

  • Gin: The primary spirit that provides a robust foundation. It introduces botanical flavors that define the drink.
  • Lime Juice: Adds a zesty kick. It balances the gin’s botanicals with its sharp, tangy character.
  • Sparkling Water or Club Soda: Introduces fizziness. This element lightens the drink and enhances its refreshing nature.

What is the difference between Gin Rickey, Tom Collins and Gin and Tonic

The Gin Rickey, Tom Collins, and Gin and Tonic are all refreshing gin-based cocktails, but they each boast distinct characteristics. The drink is a blend of gin, fresh lime juice, and sparkling water, emphasizing the gin’s botanicals with the tartness of lime and the bubbly lift of sparkling water. In contrast, the Tom Collins combines gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and soda water. This cocktail has a sweeter profile, thanks to the simple syrup, and opts for lemon as its citrus component. Meanwhile, the Gin and Tonic merges gin with tonic water. The quinine bitterness in tonic water gives this drink a unique flavor, differing from the soda water in the others. While tonic water alone complements the gin, many enjoy adding a slice of lime or lemon for an extra zesty touch. Each drink, while rooted in gin, offers a distinct flavor and experience.

Gin Rickey Variations

Curious about options? Try a variation from our selection:

  • Raspberry Rickey: Fresh raspberries bring a sweet and fruity depth to this mix, perfectly complementing the gin’s botanicals. The tartness of the raspberries against the gin’s complexity makes this a refreshing summer choice, which I particularly enjoy.
  • Cherry Lime Rickey: Sweet, deep flavors of fresh cherries blend with the tartness of lime. This combination creates a vibrant and flavorful balance of sweet and sour, ideal for those who love a fruity twist.
  • Ginger Rickey: Spicy ginger adds a sharp, warm bite, creating an exciting contrast with the crisp gin. This option suits those who appreciate a spicy zing in their sips.
  • Raspberry Lime Rickey: Tart lime and sweet raspberry come together, offering a harmonious mix of zesty and refreshing flavors. The blend of raspberry and lime is both tantalizing and invigorating.
  • Vodka Rickey: Replacing gin with vodka, this mix becomes smoother and more neutral. The subtlety of vodka allows the flavors of lime and soda to stand out, offering a clean, crisp taste. I find this simplicity appealing for its versatility and straightforward character.
  • Lime Gin Rickey: Lime’s citrusy sharpness pairs excellently with gin’s botanicals, creating a tart and invigorating blend. The straightforward combination of lime and gin is something I always appreciate for its no-fuss, refreshing quality.

History and Origin of the Gin Rickey

The Gin Rickey has roots in Washington, D.C., during the late 19th century. The drink started as a whiskey-based concoction named after its creator, Colonel Joe Rickey, a lobbyist who loved entertaining politicians at D.C. bars. In 1883, at Shoomaker’s bar, Colonel Rickey decided to add sparkling water to his preferred morning remedy of bourbon, ice, and lemon. Bartenders soon started serving this drink to patrons, labeling it the “Rickey.”

However, as gin became increasingly popular towards the end of the century, the whiskey in the Rickey was replaced by gin. This transition gave birth to the cocktail we know today. The gin version gained immense popularity, especially during the Prohibition era, due to the ease with which bathtub gin could blend with the refreshing citrus and sparkling water. The cocktail’s popularity in D.C. and its political circles also boosted it significantly, solidifying its place in American cocktail history.
