Ingredients

  • 2 oz peach Schnapps
  • 4 oz fresh orange juice
  • 1 oz peach Vodka, optional
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice and cherry, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour 2 oz peach Schnapps over the ice.
  • Measure and pour 4 oz fresh orange juice into the glass.
  • Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Place an orange slice and cherry on a cocktail stick and put it on the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Peach Schnapps: If you don't have peach schnapps, you can substitute any peach liqueur or peach vodka; in that last case, you may want to add a touch of peach vodka as well to make up for the lack of sugar.
  • Orange Juice: Although we highly recommend using freshly squeezed orange juice for this recipe, bottled orange juice can do the trick as well (just make sure to choose a 0 added sugar one). If you're out of orange juice, use grapefruit. It’ll change the flavor profile slightly but still work well with the peach schnapps.

Making a Pitcher of Fuzzy Navel:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of peach schnapps and 32 oz of orange juice.
  • Mix: Combine the peach schnapps and orange juice in a large pitcher. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, garnish with an orange slice, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Peach Schnapps Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic peach syrup or peach nectar / juice; these are available and do a reasonable job mimicking peach schnapps' sweet, fruity flavor.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Garnish: Instead of using a cherry for garnish (some maraschino cherries are not vegan), stick with an orange slice or opt for a fresh cherry if available. Garnish apart, this Fuzzy Navel drink is already fully vegan and you can enjoy it as it is!

What is a Fuzzy Navel?

A Fuzzy Navel is a peach schnapps-based cocktail made of peach schnapps and orange juice. “Fuzzy” refers to the texture of peaches, while “Navel” points towards navel oranges, which are often used for their sweet juice.

What is a Fuzzy Navel made of – The ingredients

Get these ingredients together for your Fuzzy Navel:

  • Peach Schnapps: This is the primary flavoring agent in a Fuzzy Navel. It’s a sweet, peach-flavored liqueur that gives the cocktail its distinctive fruity taste.
  • Orange Juice: Used as the main mixer, orange juice adds a tangy citrus note to balance out the sweetness of the Peach Schnapps. It also contributes to the overall refreshing character of the drink.
  • Vodka (optional): While not always included in a traditional Fuzzy Navel, vodka can be added to increase the alcohol content without altering the flavor profile significantly. If you want to give your drink an extra alcoholic kick, you may add 1 oz of vodka to the recipe below,
  • Ice Cubes: These are used to chill the drink and dilute it slightly, making it more palatable and refreshing.
  • Orange Slice and Cherry (for garnish): These are used to enhance the visual appeal of the cocktail. The orange slice reinforces the citrus theme, while the cherry adds a pop of color and an extra sweetness if eaten.

History and Origin of the Fuzzy Navel

The Fuzzy Navel cocktail originated in the United-States in 1984, when DeKuyper’s peach schnapps was released into the American market. Ray Foley, a New Jersey bartender, is commonly credited with creating the drink. His main inspiration was the classic Screwdriver cocktail (made with vodka and fresh orange juice), which was a very popular drink in the 1980’s. This fruitier, sweeter and lighter in alcohol twist on the Screwdriver quickly gained huge popularity and propelled DeKuyper’s Peachtree Schnapps to become one of the country’s best-selling spirits.

Regarding the name, ‘Fuzzy Navel’ is a playful nod to the fuzzy skin of a peach and the navel variety of oranges used in the drink.
