  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

  • Make sure your old fashioned glass gets chilled.
  • Start by pouring 1-2 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters into the shaker.

  • Strain the mixture into the ice filled Old Fashioned glass.
  • Garnish with a lemon wheel and/or berries (blackcurrant or blueberries)

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Bourbon: If you don't have bourbon, rye whiskey or brandy can be substituted. They offer a different flavor profile but still work well in this cocktail.
  • Crème de Cassis: This is a sweet, dark red liqueur made from blackcurrants. You can use Chambord or Blackberry liqueur if you can't find it.
  • Rich Syrup: You can make your own by dissolving two parts sugar and one part water over low heat and then cooling it down before use.

Making a Pitcher of Bourbon Renewal:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of bourbon, 8 oz of lemon juice, 4 oz of crème de cassis, 4 oz of sugar syrup, and 8 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine all the ingredients. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with a cherry and a lemon wheel, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Bourbon Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic bourbon substitute; several brands are available that mimic the flavor of bourbon without the alcohol.
  • Crème de Cassis Substitute: You can make a non-alcoholic blackcurrant syrup by simmering blackcurrants with sugar and water, then straining out the solids.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

This cocktail is already vegan-friendly as it doesn't contain any animal products. However, always check your ingredients' labels to ensure they're suitable for vegans. Some brands of liquor might use animal products in their processing methods.

What is a Bourbon Renewal?

A Bourbon Renewal Drink is a bourbon-based cocktail made of bourbon, lemon juice, creme de cassis, and sugar syrup. It’s relatively easy to make as it involves straightforward mixing of ingredients without any complex techniques or processes. The Bourbon Renewal is a variant of the classic Whiskey Sour but with an added twist from the creme de cassis, which gives it a unique fruity sweetness and deep red color. Jeffrey Morgenthaler created this cocktail at Clyde Common in Portland, Oregon; its balanced flavor profile appeals to whiskey enthusiasts and those new to bourbon cocktails.

What is a Bourbon Renewal made of – The ingredients

Start your Bourbon Renewal Drink with these essential ingredients:

  • Bourbon: The drink’s base spirit, bourbon, gives the cocktail a rich and smooth flavor.
  • Lemon Juice: Adds a tangy freshness that balances out the sweetness of the other ingredients.
  • Crème de Cassis: A blackcurrant liqueur that imparts the drink a fruity sweetness and deep red color.
  • Rich Syrup: This sweetener helps to mellow out the tartness of the lemon juice and enhance the flavors of the bourbon and crème de cassis.
  • Angostura Bitters: A few dashes of these aromatic bitters add complexity and depth to the cocktail, rounding out its flavor profile.

History and Origin of the Bourbon Renewal

Jeffrey Morgenthaler, a famous bartender from Portland, Oregon, created the Bourbon Renewal cocktail in the late 20th century. He started mixing drinks in the late 1990s when people were excited about craft cocktails.

In 1996, he worked at a popular bar in Portland called Clyde Common. That’s where he came up with the idea for the Bourbon Renewal. He wanted to put a new spin on the classic whiskey sour by adding a French touch – crème de cassis.

Crème de cassis is a sweet blackcurrant liqueur from France. When Jeffrey added it to his whiskey sour, it gave the drink a unique flavor, making it different from other cocktails. People loved it, and it quickly became a favorite at the bar.

The Bourbon Renewal didn’t stay a secret for long. People worldwide enjoy this cocktail for its perfect mix of sweet, tart, and strong flavors.
