  • Crushed ice
  • Toasted & grated coconut, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Large Highball or Hurricane glass

Instructions

  • Add Condensed Milk: Measure and pour 2 oz condensed milk into the blender bowl.
  • Add Coconut Milk: Add 2 oz coconut milk.
  • Add Coconut Water: Add 1 oz coconut water.
  • Add Cachaça: Now, add 2 oz Cachaça to the mix.

  • Serve: Pour into a large highball or hurricane glass.
  • Garnish: Add a straw and sprinkle with grated coconut to garnish (optional). Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Cachaça: If you can't find cachaça, white rum is a good substitute that I've used before. It doesn't have the same grassy notes as cachaça, but it works in a pinch.
  • Condensed Milk: If you're out of condensed milk, you can make your own by simmering regular milk and sugar until it reduces to a thick, sweet consistency.
  • Coconut Milk: If you don't have coconut milk on hand, coconut cream diluted with water can be a substitute.
  • Coconut water: If you are out of coconut water replace it with more coconut milk, the drink will have a slightly different texture but it will still be delicious.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Cachaça Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spirit substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic sugarcane spirit’s flavor.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular cachaça, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Condensed Milk Substitute: Use a vegan condensed milk substitute made from plant-based milk and sugar. Several brands are available in the market, or you can make your own at home.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this vegan substitute instead of the regular condensed milk, follow the original steps, and enjoy a vegan Batida.

What is a Batida de Coco?

A Batida is a Brazilian cocktail made of cachaça, milk, and sugar. It’s relatively easy to make as it only requires the ingredients to be blended or shaken with ice. The name ‘Batida’ translates to ‘shaken’ or ‘hit’ in Portuguese, reflecting its preparation method. It is a popular beverage in Brazil, often enjoyed on festive occasions and during the Carnival season.

What is a Batida de Coco made of – The ingredients

For a homemade Batida, you’ll require these ingredients:

  • Cachaça: This is the base spirit of a Batida. It’s a Brazilian liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice, providing a distinctive flavor.
  • Condensed Milk: Adds creaminess and sweetness to the cocktail. It balances out the strong taste of Cachaça.
  • Coconut Milk: Adds freshness and flavor to the drink.
  • Coconut water: Slightly dilute the drink without altering the flavor.
  • Crushed Ice: Chills the cocktail and works perfectly when blended together with the cocktail’s ingredients to deliver a slushy consistency.
