Give Your Christmas Cocktails that Holiday Sparkle with These 8 Creative Garnish Ideas

When I make my Christmas cocktails each year, I love adding garnishes that bring a bit of holiday magic.

Garnishes don’t have to be ordinary—you can get creative with seasonal touches like citrus zests cut into festive shapes, a hint of edible glitter, or a sprig of “snowy” rosemary for that cozy winter feel… Or anything else that sets the holiday’s mood!

Here are some fun, show-stopping touches that will impress your guests.

1. Zests – A Festive Scent and Unique Touch

Citrus zests add a fresh aroma to your drinks, providing a lively sensory layer. For a festive look, cut zests into shapes like Christmas trees, stars, or snowflakes. They pair beautifully with drinks like the Christmas Martini. If you’re new to working with citrus, check out our How to Make Cocktail Twists article for tips on getting clean, precise cuts. If you’re not too sure about your knife skills or are preparing the garnishes with kids, peel the citrus beforehand and use scissors to cut the shape into the zests.

  • Flamed Zest: Try flaming the zest for extra effect! This releases aromatic oils, giving your cocktail a smoky, citrus fragrance. Hold the zest over your drink, run a lit match along the peel’s edge, and express it over the drink, through the flame to enjoy the burst of flavor and aroma.

2. Dried Oranges – Festive and Eco-Friendly

Dried orange slices bring a rich, warm look to cocktails and are sustainable— after peeling an orange (or any other citrus, actually) to use the zest as a garnish, you can simply slice it and put it to dry in a dehydrator or oven on low heat (see our article: How to Make and Use Dehydrated Garnishes). They also make charming, eco-friendly decorations for your Christmas tree! Simply tie a ribbon through the dried orange slice (you can previously paint them with a bit of glitter if you want) and hang it wherever you want as a natural & festive ornament. This garnish pairs perfectly with winter spices in cocktails like the Christmas Martini or the Hot Toddy.

3. Spices – Warm Fragrance and Holiday Flair

Spices bring warmth and coziness to any cocktail. Here are some great options:

  • Cinnamon Sticks: A cinnamon stick in a cocktail like Tom & Jerry adds a touch of winter warmth. Lightly burn the end of the stick with a blowtorch to release a cozy, aromatic scent (just make sure to extinguish any remaining flame before serving).
  • Star Anise: With its decorative star shape and subtle licorice flavor, star anise works beautifully for presentation and aroma in drinks like the Añogo. For an even more Christmassy touch, you can paint it with a touch of edible glitter before using it.
  • Candied Ginger: For a sweet, spicy element, garnish with candied ginger.

4. Rosemary Sprigs – The Mini Christmas Tree

Rosemary sprigs make excellent holiday garnishes, adding a festive green touch that resembles a Christmas tree branch. Try these techniques for an even more seasonal effect:

  • Snowy Rosemary Sprig: Dust rosemary sprigs lightly with icing sugar to mimic snow. This effect looks stunning in darker cocktails, such as a Porto Flip or a nice, hot mug of Mulled Wine.
  • Enhanced Aroma: Use a kitchen blowtorch to open up the rosemary leaves. To do so, hold the sprig near the flame (without burning it) to gently heat it and release its oils, creating a fuller, tree-like shape.

5. Candies – Sweet and Festive

Candy garnishes add a playful holiday touch that’s sure to bring smiles.

  • Candy Canes: Hang a mini candy cane on the glass rim for a fun decoration in a Poinsettia or Pink Squirrel drink. You can also crush candy canes to rim glasses for a festive peppermint flavor.
  • Chocolate: Attach a small chocolate square to the side of the glass, or add a chocolate-covered stirrer for indulgence. Chocolate pairs beautifully with cocktails like the Toblerone Cocktail or Oatmeal Cookie Cocktail. You can also use melted chocolate or chocolate syrup to rim your glass. White chocolate works too!

6. Edible Glitter – Make Your Drink Sparkle

Add some holiday sparkle with edible glitter! This fine powder dissolves in drinks, creating a shimmery effect.

  • Holiday Colors: Choose red, gold, or silver edible glitter to add color to your cocktail, turning it into a sparkling ornament of its own.
  • Pro Tip: Use edible glitter in sparkling drinks like the Poinsettia drink. The bubbles lift the glitter, creating movement and enhancing the sparkle.

7. Rims – Festive and Flavorful

A festive rim instantly transforms a drink and adds an extra layer of flavor.

  • Colored Sugar and Glitter: Dip the glass rims in colored sugar or edible glitter for a touch of sparkle. This works well with sweet drinks, like the Peach Bellini mocktail or a Golden Cadillac.
  • Sprinkles: Use festive sprinkles for a fun, colorful garnish on holiday mocktails or sweet cocktails like the Brandy Alexander or Coquito. It’s an easy way to add a bit of cheer. For an even richer rim, it also works very well with cookie crumbs (just like in this Oatmeal Cookie recipe)!

8. Play with Ice Cubes – Festive and Functional

Ice cubes can be decorative too!

  • Decorated Ice Cubes: Freeze fresh berries, edible flowers, or small herbs like rosemary or mint into your ice cubes. These add a festive touch and infuse the drink as they melt, perfect for a Christmas Punch.
  • Colored Ice Cubes: Freeze hibiscus tea to make deep red ice cubes. These add a beautiful color that melts into your cocktail, enhancing both flavor and visual appeal.
  • Glitter Ice Cubes: Add edible glitter to the ice cube trays before freezing. As the cubes melt, the glitter slowly infuses into your drink, creating an elegant shimmer.

Garnish Safety Remarks

When garnishing your holiday drinks, make sure all garnishes are edible to keep things safe and enjoyable—non-edible decorations can be risky. Also, keep an eye out when serving garnished drinks to kids; small items like candy or star anise can be choking hazards, so choose garnishes carefully for little ones.
