  • 4 oz tomato juice
  • ½ oz lemon juice
  • 2 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 dashes of Hot Sauce
  • 1 pinch of Salt
  • 1 pinch of Pepper
  • Celery stalk, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Shaker Set
  • Strainer

Instructions

  • Fill your highball glass with ice cubes, stir and set aside.
  • Sprinkle 1 pinch of Salt and 1 pinch of Pepper into the shaker.
  • Add 2 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce and 2 dashes of Hot Sauce.
  • Add 4 oz tomato juice to the glass.
  • Squeeze in ½ oz lemon juice.
  • Pour 2 oz Spiced Rum over the ice.
  • Ice up your shaker and strain your mixture back and forth into the shaker glass, repeat five times.
  • Replace the ice into your highball glass and finally pour your drink into it.
  • Garnish with a celery stalk if desired.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Spiced Rum: If you don't have spiced rum, use regular white or dark rum and add a pinch of cinnamon for that spicy kick. I
  • Tomato Juice: Vegetable juice is a good alternative if you prefer something other than tomato juice's strong flavor. It's lighter but still brings that savory essence.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: Soy sauce can be used in place of Worcestershire sauce. It changes the character of the drink but still works. Just be careful with the salt since soy sauce is already quite salty.

Making a Pitcher:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of spiced rum, 32 oz of tomato juice, 16 dashes of hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce, 4 oz of lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine all the ingredients.  Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, garnish with a celery stalk, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Spiced Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic rum substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic rum's flavor.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular spiced rum, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Worcestershire Sauce Substitute: Traditional Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies. To make this drink vegan, use a vegan-friendly Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce as an alternative.

What is a Spiced Rum Bloody Mary?

A Spiced Rum Bloody Mary is a rum-based cocktail made of spiced rum, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, and pepper. This drink is relatively easy to make but does require a careful balance of flavors to achieve the right blend of spicy, tangy, and savory notes that make it so distinctive. It’s a variant of the classic Bloody Mary cocktail, which traditionally uses vodka instead of rum. Spiced rum in this version adds a layer of complexity to the flavor profile, making it an interesting twist on the original recipe.

History and Origin

The Spiced Rum Bloody Mary cocktail, a delightful twist on the classic Bloody Mary, has an intriguing history and origin. This cocktail’s story begins with its base drink, the Bloody Mary.

The Bloody Mary, a popular brunch cocktail known for its savory flavor profile, traces its roots back to the early 20th century. The exact origin is somewhat disputed, but one of the most accepted theories points to Fernand Petiot, a bartender at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. He reportedly concocted this tomato juice and vodka mix in the 1920s as a hangover cure for American expatriates.

Fast forward to the mid-20th century, when rum started gaining popularity in America. Bartenders began experimenting with different spirits in traditional cocktails. That’s when the Spiced Rum Bloody Mary made its debut. The spiced rum added a new depth of flavor to the traditional Bloody Mary, giving it a sweet yet spicy kick that was instantly loved by many.

Spiced rum instead of vodka transformed this classic cocktail into something more exotic and flavorful. The spices in the rum complemented the savory tomato juice and Worcestershire sauce perfectly, creating a unique taste sensation.
