  • ½ oz orange liqueur
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz passion fruit syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Salt for rimming the glass, optional
  • Lime wheel or passion fruit slice, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Margarita Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your margarita glass with ice and give it a quick stir to chill it.
  • Combine Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, pour in 1½ oz Tequila, ½ oz orange liqueur, 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 1 oz passion fruit syrup.
  • Shake: Ice up your cocktail shaker and give the mixture a good shake until well combined and chilled.
  • Rim: If desired, rim your margarita glass with salt.
  • Pour: Fine strain the mixture into your chilled margarita glass.
  • Garnish: Add a lime wheel or passion fruit slice for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you're out of Tequila, use vodka as a substitute. It won't have the same flavor profile but will still make a tasty drink. For a smoky twist, try using mezcal instead of Tequila.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice can work in a pinch if fresh limes aren't available. However, I always recommend fresh when possible for the best flavor.
  • Orange Liqueur: If you don't have any orange liqueur you can use a few dashes of orange bitters or a splash of orange juice.
  • Passion Fruit Syrup: If you can't find passion fruit syrup, you can make your own by reducing passion fruit juice with sugar on the stove. Alternatively, you could use another tropical-flavored syrup like mango or pineapple.

Making a Pitcher of Passion Fruit Margarita:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 12 oz of Tequila, 8 oz of fresh lime juice, 4 oz of orange liqueur and 8 oz of passion fruit syrup.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Tequila, lime juice, and passion fruit syrup. Add ice and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled margarita glasses, garnish with a lime wheel or passion fruit slice, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; several brands are available that mimic Tequila's flavor without the alcohol.
  • Orange liqueur: Opt for an orange syrup or a few dashes of orange essence.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of regular Tequila, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

This cocktail is already vegan-friendly as it doesn't contain any animal products. Just check the labels of your ingredients to ensure they're vegan. Some brands of liquor may use animal products in their processing methods.

What is a Passion Fruit Margarita made of – The ingredients

These are the ingredients you need for a delicious Passion Fruit Margarita:

  • Passion Fruit Syrup: The star of the show, passion fruit syrup, adds a tropical and tangy flavor to the Margarita. It’s the primary source of sweetness and gives the drink its unique taste.
  • Tequila: This is the base spirit of any margarita. It provides an alcoholic kick and complements the fruity flavors.
  • Lime Juice: Lime juice brings acidity to balance out the sweetness of the passion fruit. It also adds a refreshing citrus note.
  • Orange Liqueur: Typically, triple sec or Cointreau, orange liqueur enhances the overall fruitiness of the cocktail and adds depth to its flavor.
  • Ice Cubes: Ice is used to chill the Margarita, making it a refreshing choice for warm weather or spicy foods.
  • Salt (for rim): A salted rim is traditional for margaritas. It contrasts with and enhances both sweet and sour flavors in the drink.
  • Fresh Passion Fruit or Lime (for garnish): A slice or half of fresh passion fruit or lime can improve the presentation and add an extra flavor when sipped.

History and Origin of the Passion Fruit Margarita

The original Margarita, from which the Passion Fruit version evolved, dates back to the 1930s or 1940s. There are several stories about who first created this iconic cocktail. Some credit Carlos “Danny” Herrera, a restaurant owner in Mexico, who reportedly invented the drink for a customer allergic to all alcohol except Tequila. He combined the strong spirit with lime and triple sec to make the strong spirit more palatable.

Another story points to Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite who supposedly whipped up the concoction for friends at her Acapulco vacation home in 1948. Regardless of its origin, the Margarita became a hit in the United States by the 1950s.
