  • Add Lemon Juice: Measure and pour ¾ oz lemon juice into the shaker.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Rye Whiskey: Bourbon works well as a substitute if you don't have rye whiskey. It adds a slightly sweeter profile to the drink.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lime juice can be used instead of lemon juice for a different citrus twist.
  • Maple Syrup: Honey or agave syrup can replace maple syrup if you prefer or if that's what you have.
  • Egg White: For those who prefer not to use raw egg whites, aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas) works surprisingly well as a vegan alternative.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Whiskey Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative; these are available and reasonably mimic whiskey's flavor profile.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Egg White Substitute: Use aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas) instead of egg white. It froths up nicely and provides a similar texture without using animal products.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using aquafaba instead of egg white for a vegan-friendly version of this cocktail.

What is a Filibuster Cocktail?

A Filibuster Cocktail is a rye whiskey-based drink made of rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple syrup, and egg whites. It’s not difficult to make, but it does require some shaking techniques to properly emulsify the egg white for that smooth, frothy texture. This cocktail offers a unique blend of flavors, with the richness of maple syrup balancing the tartness of lemon juice.

History and Origin of the Filibuster Cocktail

Erik Adkins created the drink in San Francisco as part of the modern craft cocktail movement. He aimed to blend traditional ingredients with new twists, using rye whiskey for its bold flavor and maple syrup for a touch of sweetness. The name “Filibuster” likely reflects the drink’s strong and assertive character, much like the political maneuver it’s named after.
