Ingredients

  • oz Vodka
  • oz Crème de Cacao
  • 1 oz Half-and-Half
  • Ice cubes
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Martini Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer

Instructions

  • Chill Glass: Place your martini glass in the freezer for a few hours or fill it up with ice cubes and stir a few times to chill it.
  • Add Half-and-Half: Add 1 oz Half-and-Half to the shaker.
  • Add Crème de Cacao: Measure and add 1½ oz Crème de Cacao to the mixture.
  • Add Vodka: Pour 1½ oz Vodka into the shaker.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake Well: Shake the ingredients vigorously until well chilled.
  • Strain: Fine strain the cocktail into the chilled martini glass with no ice.
  • Garnish: Sprinkle chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder on top for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: If you're out of vodka, gin can make a decent stand-in, although it will add its botanical notes. I've also used rum for a more tropical twist.
  • Crème de Cacao: You could use chocolate liqueur in a pinch, although it's usually sweeter.
  • Half-and-Half: I've substituted whole milk or even a bit of heavy cream if I didn't have half-and-half. You could even use coconut milk as a vegan option, but more on that later.

Making a Pitcher of Chocolate Martini:

  • Scale: To serve 8 people, multiply each ingredient by 8. That's 12 oz of vodka, 12 oz of crème de cacao, and 8 oz of half-and-half.
  • Mix: Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher with ice cubes and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into chilled martini glasses, garnish, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Use non-alcoholic vodka or water with a drop or two of vanilla extract for flavor.
  • Crème de Cacao Substitute: Mix chocolate syrup with a touch of non-alcoholic vanilla extract.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the regular steps using these non-alcoholic alternatives.

Making it Vegan:

  • Replace the half-and-half with a dairy-free alternative like coconut milk or almond milk. Opt for vegan chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish.

What is a 5-star Chocolate Martini?

5-star Chocolate Martini offers a seamless blend of top-shelf vodka and high-quality crème de cacao, often accompanied by premium half-and-half or heavy cream. This elevated version often includes small but significant touches like perfectly rimmed glass with fine cocoa powder or artisan chocolate shavings for garnish. The experience delivers a smooth, creamy, and luxuriously rich taste that leaves a lasting impression, elevating it above standard Chocolate Martinis. It’s commonly found in upscale bars and restaurants, where meticulous attention to detail and ingredient quality are paramount.

What is a Godiva Chocolate Martini?

Godiva Chocolate Martini elevates the classic chocolate cocktail experience by using Godiva Chocolate Liqueur as one of its main ingredients. This premium liqueur provides a rich, velvety chocolate flavor that stands out for its quality and depth. Often, top-shelf vodka and sometimes even a splash of premium crème de cacao accompany the Godiva liqueur to create a luxurious and smooth cocktail. This particular martini is a favorite at high-end bars and popular for special occasions. The drink epitomizes indulgence and is recognized for its superior chocolate taste.

How do I make a Clear Chocolate Martini?

Making a clear Chocolate Martini is an exercise in cocktail finesse. Ditch the cream or milk and focus on the essentials. Start with top-shelf vodka, and add a measure of white crème de cacao. A rigorous shake with ice in a cocktail shaker ensures the ingredients blend seamlessly while maintaining clarity. Strain it into a chilled martini glass. You get a crystal-clear drink that delivers the luxurious chocolate flavor without the milkiness of a regular version. This clear version is perfect for those who want to taste pure chocolate bliss without the creaminess.

Chocolate Martini with Vodka

Using vodka in a Chocolate Martini makes sense; it’s a neutral spirit that lets the chocolate shine. Go for quality here; top-shelf brands like Grey Goose, Tito’s, or Belvedere can elevate your cocktail to the next level. These smooth and clean brands won’t overshadow the chocolate notes from your crème de cacao or chocolate liqueur. If you’re looking for a go-to vodka for your Chocolate Martini, try Tito’s. It’s smooth and reasonably priced, making it a smart pick for a well-balanced, top-notch martini.

Chocolate Martini Variations

Want to spruce up your Chocolate Martini game? Try one of our handpicked favorites:

  • White Chocolate Martini: Rich, velvety white chocolate seamlessly blends with a smooth spirit base in this concoction. Its creamy, sweet character transforms it into a luxurious indulgence. The creamy sweetness captivates me; it’s like enjoying a melted bar of high-quality white chocolate, enhanced by the warmth of alcohol.
  • Mint Chocolate Martini: A refreshing, cool mint flavor merges with the deep, comforting notes of chocolate. Mint introduces a crisp, invigorating twist, perfectly complementing the chocolate’s richness, creating a harmonious blend of freshness and decadence.
  • Espresso Chocolate Martini: Bold, robust espresso meets the luscious depth of chocolate here. Espresso adds a caffeine kick and a slightly bitter edge, beautifully balancing the chocolate’s sweetness. This combination serves as an ideal pick-me-up, marrying a love for coffee with the allure of chocolate.
  • Coconut Chocolate Martini: Tropical, nutty coconut essence pairs with smooth, sweet chocolate. Coconut contributes a light, exotic flair, creating a delightful contrast with the chocolate’s richness, like a chocolate-covered tropical getaway in a glass.

  • Vegan Chocolate Martini: Catering to plant-based preferences, this martini uses dairy-free chocolate and alternative creamers. Vegan chocolate maintains a rich, full flavor, ensuring no compromise on taste. It stands as a testament to indulgent vegan options, offering a guilt-free way to enjoy a classic favorite.
  • Strawberry Chocolate Martini: Sweet, juicy strawberries pair with creamy, rich chocolate. Strawberries introduce a light, fruity note, beautifully complementing the chocolate’s depth. This classic combination of strawberries and chocolate becomes a delightful sip, perfect for those who adore this timeless pairing.

History and Origin of the Chocolate Martini

The Chocolate Martini doesn’t have a definitive origin story, but it gained prominence in the 1990s during the broader Martini Renaissance. As the classic Martini came back, bartenders and mixologists began experimenting with new ingredients and flavors. This creative period gave birth to the Chocolate Martini, among other flavored Martini creations.

The combination of vodka and crème de cacao made it an instant hit for those who wanted a dessert-like experience in a cocktail glass. The cocktail rode the wave of the burgeoning craft cocktail movement, finding its place on menus in upscale bars and restaurants across the United States. Over time, it has become a modern classic, evolving with new variations and flavor profiles, appealing to chocolate lovers and cocktail enthusiasts alike.
