Ingredients

  • oz Vodka
  • oz Crème de Cacao
  • 1 oz Half-and-Half
  • Ice cubes
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Martini Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer

Instructions

  • Chill Glass: Place your martini glass in the freezer for a few hours or fill it up with ice cubes and stir a few times to chill it.
  • Add Half-and-Half: Add 1 oz Half-and-Half to the shaker.
  • Add Crème de Cacao: Measure and add 1½ oz Crème de Cacao to the mixture.
  • Add Vodka: Pour 1½ oz Vodka into the shaker.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake Well: Shake the ingredients vigorously until well chilled.
  • Strain: Fine strain the cocktail into the chilled martini glass with no ice.
  • Garnish: Sprinkle chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder on top for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: If you're out of vodka, gin can make a decent stand-in, although it will add its botanical notes. I've also used rum for a more tropical twist.
  • Crème de Cacao: You could use chocolate liqueur in a pinch, although it's usually sweeter.
  • Half-and-Half: I've substituted whole milk or even a bit of heavy cream if I didn't have half-and-half. You could even use coconut milk as a vegan option, but more on that later.

Making a Pitcher of Chocolate Martini:

  • Scale: To serve 8 people, multiply each ingredient by 8. That's 12 oz of vodka, 12 oz of crème de cacao, and 8 oz of half-and-half.
  • Mix: Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher with ice cubes and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into chilled martini glasses, garnish, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Use non-alcoholic vodka or water with a drop or two of vanilla extract for flavor.
  • Crème de Cacao Substitute: Mix chocolate syrup with a touch of non-alcoholic vanilla extract.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the regular steps using these non-alcoholic alternatives.

Making it Vegan:

  • Replace the half-and-half with a dairy-free alternative like coconut milk or almond milk. Opt for vegan chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish.
