Ingredients
- 2 oz Brandy
- 1 oz hot water
- ½ oz simple syrup
- 2 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters
- Lemon peel
- Hot water to warm up the glass
Equipment
- Metal Blazer Mug or Stainless Steel Frothing Pitcher
- Cognac Glass
- Kitchen Blowtorch
- Measuring Jigger
- Bar spoon
- Small Saucer
Instructions
- Prep Glass: Pour hot water into your Cognac glass to warm it up. Set it aside.
- Combine Ingredients: In the metal mug or frothing pitcher, combine 2 oz Brandy with ½ oz simple syrup and 2 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters. Give it a quick stir.
- Prep Material: Gather your kitchen blowtorch, a cup with 1 oz hot water inside, a small saucer, and your Cognac glass filled with hot water. As a safety measure, also prepare an extra bowl of tap water that you’ll keep nearby while you’re flaming the drink.
- Flame It Up: Discard the hot water inside the Cognac glass. Using the kitchen blowtorch, flame the mix inside the metal tin.
- Serve: Delicately pour the drink into the warmed Cognac glass and immediately pour 1 oz hot water to put out the flame. Cover the glass with the saucer to extinguish any remaining flame and wait a few minutes for the drink to cool down.
- Garnish: Twist a lemon peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it into the glass. Serve immediately and enjoy while the drink is still hot.
Notes
Substitutes:
- Brandy: Any kind of brandy of your liking can be used to make this cocktail. If you don't have brandy at all, you can use bourbon or dark rum for a different but equally warming flavor.
- Simple Syrup: If you don't have any simple syrup, you can easily make some at home by mixing together equal parts of sugar (any kind you like) and hot water. Stir well to dissolve and let it cool down before using it. In the refrigerator, this homemade simple syrup will last for about a month.
- Angostura Bitters: Any kind of aromatic bitters can be used to prepare this drink; just try to stick to bitters that are heavy on spices and low on sugar for a better result; for instance, classic orange or lemon bitters work particularly well.
Making it Vegan:
The Brandy Blazer cocktail is naturally vegan as it doesn't contain any animal products. Most spirits, including brandy, are vegan-friendly. However, some brands may use animal products in their production process, especially if a filtration process is involved. Check the brand's website or contact them directly to ensure their products are vegan. The same goes for the simple syrup and/or sugar, as some sugars are refined over bone char (organic brown sugar is usually the safest way to go in order to avoid this issue). What is a Brandy Blazer?
A Brandy Blazer is a cocktail made of brandy, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and a lemon peel. It’s not difficult to make but requires caution when igniting the brandy; this step, in addition to being spectacular, adds depth and warmth to the drink’s flavor profile.
