Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: If you don't have Gin, I recommend trying vodka for a cleaner taste, though it lacks the botanical notes.
  • Dry Vermouth: In a pinch, I've used white wine with a drop of vinegar to mimic the dryness of vermouth.
  • Maraschino Liqueur: Cherry brandy can work as an alternative, though it adds a slightly different flavor profile.
  • Orange Bitters: Opt for Angostura bitters or any other citrus bitters for a twist.
  • Absinthe: If you are out of absinthe try using an anise-flavored spirit or liqueur.

Making a Pitcher of Tuxedo No.2:

  • Scale: To serve 8, multiply all ingredients by 8, using 16 dashes of orange bitters, 8 dashes of absinthe, 12 oz each of Gin and dry vermouth and 2 oz of maraschino liqueur.
  • Mix: Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher filled with ice.
  • Serve: Stir well and strain into individual chilled martini glasses, garnishing each with a lemon twist or cherry.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute; these capture the essence without the alcohol.
  • Vermouth Substitute: Try white grape juice with apple cider vinegar for acidity.
  • Maraschino Substitute: Use cherry syrup for sweetness and flavor.
  • Absinthe: try using a touch of anise-flavored syrup.
  • Orange bitters: use a drop of orange blossom water.

History and Origin of the Tuxedo No.2

The Tuxedo, first documented in Harry Johnson’s 1900 ‘Bartender’s Manual’, is one of those classic cocktails which has different variations delineated with No.1, No.2 and so on.

The name itself comes from the Tuxedo Club, a private country club near the town of Tuxedo Park, not too far away from New York City.
