Notes

Substitutes:

  • Cold Black Tea: If you don't have black tea, use green tea for a lighter flavor or even Earl Grey tea for a different twist. In short, feel free to experiment with all your favorite kinds of tea!
  • Silver Tequila: Any good quality, 100% agave blanco tequila works well here. If you don’t have tequila or simply are not a fan of this spirit, you can use vodka for a lighter version. For a different take on this cocktail, Bourbon or Tennessee whisky such as Jack Daniel’s also works great: it will make for a pretty different yet still delicious cocktail.
  • Honey-Flavored Vodka: Regular vodka with a teaspoon of honey can substitute nicely if you can't find honey-flavored vodka. You can also simply omit it and use honey syrup (2 parts honey to 1 part hot water) instead of the rich sugar syrup. If you are going with a bourbon version of this cocktail, a whisky liqueur such as Jack Daniel’s Honey is also a great substitute for the honey-flavored vodka.
  • Rich Sugar Syrup: Rich syrup is really easy to make at home: simply mix together 2 parts powdered sugar and 1 part water in a saucepan, stir to dissolve over low heat, and let it cool down to room temperature before using. If you’re in a rush and don’t have the time to prepare the syrup, simple syrup can be used as a substitute for the rich syrup. Honey syrup is also a good alternative in this cocktail: to make your own, simply mix together 2 parts honey and 1 part warm water and stir well to dissolve.
  • Lemon Juice: Lime juice offers a slightly different but refreshing citrus note if you're out of lemons. Bottled lemon juice can work as well, but it won’t be as fresh and crisp as if using fresh citrus juice.
  • Angostura Bitters: Orange or lemon bitters also work well in this cocktail if you’re out of Angostura bitters.

Making a Pitcher of Teaquila:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of cold black tea, 12 oz of Silver Tequila, 4 oz of honey-flavored vodka, 4 oz of rich sugar syrup, 4 oz of fresh lemon juice, and 16 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher, add ice, and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into ice-filled highball glasses, and garnish each glass with a lemon slice or peel. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available and mimic tequila's flavor quite well. Otherwise, you can use fresh orange juice as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic, and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
  • Honey-Flavored Vodka Substitute: You can simply omit it and replace it with a dash of honey or honey syrup to keep the taste without the booze.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Honey-Flavored Vodka Substitute: Replace honey-flavored vodka with regular vodka and add agave syrup instead of honey to keep this cocktail vegan-friendly.
