Notes

Substitutes:

  • Spiced Rum: If you don't have spiced rum, I've used dark rum with a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg for a similar flavor profile.
  • Passionfruit Syrup: In place of passionfruit syrup, try mango syrup or puree for a different tropical twist.
  • Lime Juice: Lemon juice works as a substitute for a slightly different citrus touch.
  • Orange Juice: If you are out of orange juice try out with pineapple juice for a more tropical twist.
  • Grenadine: Opt for a raspberry syrup or even a strawberry for a fruity variation.

Making a Pitcher of Spiced Hurricane:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of spiced rum, 4 oz of grenadine, 8 oz of passionfruit syrup, 8 oz of lime juice, and 8 oz of orange juice.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the spiced rum, passionfruit syrup, lime juice, grenadine, and orange juice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into individual ice-filled Hurricane glasses, garnish with an orange slice, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Spiced Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spiced spirit; these are available and mimic the warm spices well.
  • Proceed As Usual: Replace the spiced rum with your non-alcoholic substitute and follow the original steps for a delicious mocktail version.

History and Origin of the Spiced Hurricane

The Spiced Hurricane cocktail is a variation of the famous hurricane glass, which was invented in New Orleans during the 1940s. Bartenders at Pat O’Brien’s bar created it to use up extra rum, which was more available than other liquors at the time. They mixed rum with passionfruit syrup and citrus juices, crafting a vibrant and flavorful drink that quickly gained popularity. The original Hurricane used light and dark rums, but the spiced version adds warmth and complexity with spiced rum. This variation keeps the lively spirit of the classic while offering a unique twist on the traditional recipe.
