Ingredients

  • 2 oz Soju
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • ½ oz grenadine
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice or cherry, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Soju: Pour 2 oz Soju over the ice.
  • Add Orange Juice: Measure and pour 4 oz orange juice into the glass.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently, if desired.
  • Add Grenadine: Slowly pour ½ oz grenadine into the glass to create a layered effect.
  • Garnish: Place an orange slice or cherry on top for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Soju: If you don't have Soju, you can use vodka for a similar but slightly more robust flavor. I've also tried using white rum, which adds a different but pleasant twist.
  • Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice tastes best, but store-bought works fine too. In a pinch, I've used pineapple juice for a tropical variation.
  • Grenadine: If you're out of Grenadine, you can quickly substitute pomegranate juice with some simple syrup. It's not the same, but it works well.

Making a Pitcher of Soju Sunrise:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Soju, 32 oz of orange juice, and 4 oz of Grenadine.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Soju and orange juice first. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, slowly add a splash of grenadine, garnish with an orange slice or cherry, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Soju Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics Soju's flavor profile; these are available and do a good job.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of Soju, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Ensure Ingredients Are Vegan: Most commercial grenadines are vegan, but always check the label. Some brands might use animal-derived colorings.
  • Use Vegan-Friendly Garnishes: Stick to fresh fruit like orange slices or cherries for garnish to keep it vegan-friendly.
