  • 1 oz sugar syrup
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Mint sprig
  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Rocks Glass
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your highball glass with ice cubes, stir, and set it aside.
  • Add Mint: Place 6-8 fresh mint leaves into the shaker.
  • Add Lime Juice: Measure and pour 1 oz lime juice.
  • Add Sugar Syrup: Add 1 oz sugar syrup to the mix.
  • Add Pisco: Pour 2 oz Pisco into the shaker.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake: Shake your mixture for about 15 seconds.
  • Strain: Fine strain your drink into your rocks glass over fresh ice.
  • Serve: Garnish with a mint sprig and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Pisco: Try vodka for a neutral flavor if you don't have pisco. I've also used tequila for a more robust profile.
  • Lime Juice: Lemon juice is a good alternative if you're out of lime juice. It's slightly sweeter but still brings that citrus kick.
  • Sugar Syrup: Honey or agave syrup can replace sugar syrup in a pinch. They change the character of the drink but still work. Just adjust to taste, as they can be sweeter.

Making a Pitcher of Mosquito Drink:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of rum, 8 oz of lime juice, 48-64 mint leaves, and 8 oz of sugar syrup.
  • Mix: Gently muddle the mint in a large pitcher. Add the rum, lime juice, sugar syrup, the ice cubes, and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, garnish with a mint leaf, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Pisco Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic brandy substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic wine spirit's.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular pisco, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Sugar Syrup Substitute: Ensure your sugar syrup is made with vegan-friendly sugar. Some sugars are processed using bone char, which isn't vegan. Opt for organic cane sugar or agave nectar to keep it vegan-friendly.
