Ingredients

  • oz Midori
  • ½ oz Vodka
  • ½ oz Triple Sec
  • ¾ oz pineapple juice
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Pineapple slice and/or Maraschino cherry, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball or Hurricane Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a Highball or Hurricane glass with ice. Give it a quick stir and set it aside.
  • Add Juices: Pour ¾ oz fresh lemon juice and ¾ oz pineapple juice into the shaker.
  • Add Triple Sec: Add ½ oz Triple Sec.
  • Add Vodka: Add ½ oz Vodka.
  • Add Midori: Measure and add 1½ oz Midori to the mix.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it, and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Discard the ice in the Highball or Hurricane glass and refill it with a generous amount of fresh, new ice cubes. Then, use the cocktail strainer to strain the drink into the ice-filled glass.
  • Garnish: Garnish with a pineapple wedge and/or maraschino cherry and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Midori: You can use another melon liqueur if you don't have Midori; however, it won’t have the same distinctive green color. To make up for that, you can try adding a drop of green food coloring to the liqueur.
  • Vodka: For a different twist, you can substitute vodka with white rum. It adds a slightly sweeter note to the drink.
  • Triple Sec: Any brand of Triple Sec can be used to prepare this cocktail. If you don't have Triple Sec on hand, you can use other types of orange liqueur, such as curaçao for example.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: You can use bottled lemon juice in a pinch, but the flavor will be less bright and fresh. Another option is to use fresh lime juice for a slightly different citrus kick.

Making a Pitcher of Midori Illusion:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 12 oz of Midori, 4 oz of vodka, 4 oz of triple sec, 6 oz of pineapple juice, and 6 oz of lemon juice.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Midori, vodka, triple sec, pineapple, and lemon juice. Add ice and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into ice-filled highball or hurricane glasses, and garnish each glass with a pineapple slice and a Maraschino cherry. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Midori Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic melon syrup; these are available and do a good job mimicking Midori's flavor.
  • Vodka Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic spirit miming vodka's neutral profile or simply leave it out.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: You can use orange peel syrup as a substitute. To make your own syrup, mix together 1 part white sugar and one part water over low heat. Stir well to dissolve the sugar, remove from the heat, and add orange peels to the syrup. Let the mixture cool down to temperature, transfer to an airtight container, and let it infuse in the fridge for at least one day. For a stronger flavor, you may add a drop of bitter orange essence to the mix. When ready to use, strain to remove the peels and store in the fridge after use.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

The Midori Illusion cocktail is naturally vegan as it doesn't contain any animal products. Most spirits, including Midori and vodka, are vegan-friendly; if you’re ever in doubt, check the label or the brand’s website to ensure no animal products are used in the production process.
