Notes

Substitutes:

  • Prosecco: You can use any kind of sparkling white wine you like to prepare this cocktail. If you don't have Prosecco, Cava, or even champagne work very well as substitutes. Just make sure to choose a wine on the dry side to maintain the overall balance of the drink.
  • Lillet Blanc or Rosé: If you can’t find Lillet, you can use other wine-based aperitifs, (such as Cocchi Americano) as a substitute, but keep in mind that Lillet has a pretty distinctive flavor profile that can be hard to recreate.
  • Sparkling Water: Any kind of unflavored mineral sparkling water can be used to prepare this drink.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Prosecco Substitute: Use non-alcoholic sparkling wine; these are available and do a good job mimicking the bubbles and taste of Prosecco.
  • Lillet Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic aperitif like Martini Floreale. They are widely available on the market and do a good job of mimicking Lillet's sweet and botanical taste.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

Lillet, whether it is the Blanc or the Rosé kind, is certified vegan-friendly. Just make sure that your prosecco is also vegan, as some producers may use ingredients of animal origin, especially if a filtration process is involved. Always check the label and the brand’s website and contact them directly in case of doubt.

History and Origin of the Lillet Spritz

In 1872, two brothers, Paul and Raymond Lillet, started their business as merchants of fine wines and spirits. They had a vision to create something unique – a product that would stand out in the crowded market of alcoholic beverages. Their idea was to blend Bordeaux wines with spices and handcrafted liqueurs. After several trials and errors, they finally perfected their recipe and introduced ‘Kina Lillet’, the precursor to today’s Lillet Blanc. If Kina Lillet is not available on the market anymore, the brand Lillet has grown significantly over the years and is now famous for its Lillet Blanc, Rosé, and Red (“Rouge”), all made in the same spirit as the original one but using different wines as a base.

The Lillet Spritz is a twist on the classic Aperol Spritz, using Lillet instead of Aperol as its base and main spirit.
