Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: If you don't have Vodka, you can use white rum for a similar effect.
  • Light Rum: You can substitute the light rum with dark rum, or even use coconut rum for a tropical flair. Spiced rum is also a great substitute for added depth.
  • Triple Sec: Any type of orange liqueur, such as curaçao for example, can be used to make this cocktail.
  • Fresh Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice works best, but store-bought is fine, too. You can use tangerine juice for a slightly sweeter profile in a pinch.
  • Cranberry Juice: If you’re out of cranberry juice, you can use pomegranate juice for a similar tart & tangy flavor profile.
  • Pineapple Juice: If you don't have pineapple juice, mango juice can be an exciting alternative that keeps the tropical vibe.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: You can use bottled lime juice in a pinch, but the flavor will be less bright and fresh. Another option is to use fresh lemon juice for a slightly different citrus kick.
  • Simple Syrup: If you don't have any simple syrup, you can easily make some at home by mixing together equal parts of sugar (any kind you like) and hot water. Stir well to dissolve and let it cool down before using it. In the refrigerator, this homemade simple syrup will last for about a month. Honey syrup (2 parts honey to 1 part warm water) or agave nectar can be used as natural sweeteners if you prefer not to use simple syrup.

Making a Pitcher of Jungle Juice:

  • Scale: To make a larger batch that serves about 8 people, multiply all the ingredients by eight. That would be 8 oz of vodka, 8 oz of light rum,4 oz of Triple Sec, 8 oz of each orange, pineapple, and cranberry juice, 6 oz of fresh lime juice, and 6 oz of simple syrup.
  • Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large punch bowl or pitcher, add ice, and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into ice-filled highball or Collins glasses, and garnish each drink with an orange slice and/or a maraschino cherry. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Use non-alcoholic vodka alternatives available in stores; they mimic the flavor without the alcohol content. You can also leave it out and simply use a bit more fruit juice to make up for the volume. Another option would be to omit the vodka and top up the drink with a dash of soda water just before serving to give it an extra kick and a nice, fizzy texture.
  • Rum Substitute: Opt for non-alcoholic rum alternatives or use coconut water for a refreshing twist. If you’re feeling crafty, you can also make your own rum substitute by infusing together rooibos tea and a bunch of spices of your liking (vanilla, cinnamon, clove, allspice, and banana are always a good way to start). Mix all the ingredients together, add hot water, cover, and let it infuse for at least 3h (the stronger the better, so if you have time let it infuse overnight. In that case, you can either let it rest in the fridge once the liquid has cooled down). Give it a taste, adjust the spice level if necessary, and strain it once you’re happy with the result. Stored properly (in an airtight container in the fridge), this “tea rum” can be kept for up to a week.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: You can use orange peel syrup as a substitute. To make your own syrup, mix together 1 part white sugar and 1 part water over low heat. Stir well to dissolve the sugar, remove from the heat, and add orange peels to the syrup. Let the mixture cool down to temperature, transfer to an airtight container, and let it infuse in the fridge for at least one day. For a stronger flavor, you may add a drop of bitter orange essence to the mix. When ready to use, strain to remove the peels and store in the fridge after use.
  • Proceed As Usual: Replace the alcoholic ingredients with their non-alcoholic counterparts and follow the original steps to enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

Jungle Juice is naturally vegan if you use fresh fruit juices and avoid animal-derived additives in your store-bought juices. Always check labels to ensure no hidden animal products are included; this goes for the maraschino cherries used for garnishing as well as some brands still use cochineal as a coloring agent.
