Notes
Substitutes:
- White Rum: If you don't have white rum, you can use light rum as a substitute. I've also tried it with vodka for a different but still enjoyable flavor.
- Absinthe: If Absinthe is too strong for your taste, try using Pernod or another anise-flavored liqueur. It's milder but still gives that unique flavor.
- Fresh Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice works in a pinch, but fresh lime juice makes a difference. You can also use lemon juice for a slightly different citrus profile.
- Maraschino Liqueur: If you don't have maraschino liqueur you can opt for Cherry Heering for a sweeter profile.
- Simple syrup: Opt for agave nectar or honey syrup for a different twist.
Making a Pitcher of Greta Garbo Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of white rum, 8 oz of lime juice, 6 oz of simple syrup, 2 oz of maraschino liqueur, and 8 bar spoons of absinthe.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the white rum, maraschino, Absinthe, fresh lime juice, and sugar syrup with ice. Stir well.
- Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled coupe glasses, garnish with a star anise, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- White Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic rum alternative; these are available and mimic the flavor quite well.
- Absinthe Substitute: Opt for an anise-flavored non-alcoholic spirit or make a simple syrup infused with star anise and fennel seeds for that licorice-like flavor.
- Maraschino: Opt for a cherry flavored syrup.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
The Greta Garbo Cocktail is naturally vegan-friendly, using plant-based ingredients like rum, Absinthe, lime juice, and sugar. If you're strict about it, just ensure that your sugar is certified vegan since some sugars are processed with bone char. What is a Greta Garbo Cocktail?
