Notes
Substitutes:
- Flor de Caña Rum: If you don't have Flor de Caña, you can use any aged rum you prefer. I've tried it with Appleton Estate, and it works great.
- Gosling's Black Seal Rum: If needed, you can substitute it with another dark rum, like Myers's Original Dark Rum.
- Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao: Triple sec or Cointreau can be alternatives; they bring a slightly different citrus profile but still taste good.
- Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice can work in a pinch, though it will alter the flavor slightly.
- Grenadine: If you don't have grenadine, pomegranate juice with simple syrup can be a substitute.
Making a Pitcher of Grand Slam Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of Flor de Caña rum, 8 oz of Gosling's Black Seal rum, 4 oz of Pierre Ferrand dry curaçao, 6 oz of lemon juice, and 4 oz of grenadine.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the rums, dry curaçao, lemon juice, and grenadine. Stir well.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into crushed ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with an orange twist, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Rum Substitute: Use non-alcoholic rum alternatives; these are available and mimic the flavor profile quite well.
- Dry Curaçao Substitute: Opt for an orange-flavored non-alcoholic syrup to replace the dry curaçao.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
The Grand Slam Cocktail is naturally vegan-friendly if you ensure your grenadine is free from animal products. Some commercial grenadines may contain cochineal (a red dye made from insects), so check labels or make your own at home using pomegranate juice and sugar. What is a Grand Slam Cocktail?
