  • 2 oz Sweet and Sour Mix
  • Cola, to top off
  • Lemon wedge
  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Sweet and Sour Mix: Measure 2 oz Sweet and Sour Mix.
  • Add Vodka: Pour 1 oz Vodka over the ice.
  • Add Jägermeister: Measure and pour 1 oz Jägermeister into the glass.
  • Add Triple Sec: Add 1 oz Triple Sec to the mix.
  • Add Whiskey: Pour in 1 oz Whiskey.
  • Top Off with Cola: Top off the drink with cola.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Garnish: Add a lemon wedge for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: If you don't have vodka, you can use white rum for a different but enjoyable flavor. I've also tried gin, which adds a botanical twist.
  • Jägermeister: If you're out of Jägermeister, try using another herbal liqueur like Fernet-Branca or another amaro for a similar complexity.
  • Triple Sec: Opt for Cointreau or Grand Marnier for a more complex orange flavor.
  • Whiskey: Any kind of whiskey will add a different character to the drink, if you are completely out of it, try to use brandy.
  • Sweet and Sour Mix: If you need a store-bought mix, you can make your own by combining equal parts lemon juice, water, and simple syrup.

Making a Pitcher of Death Star Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of vodka, 8 oz of Jägermeister, 8 oz of Triple Sec, 8 oz of Jameson, and 16 oz of sweet and sour mix.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the vodka, Jägermeister, Triple Sec, whiskey, and sweet and sour mix. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, top off with cola, stir gently, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic vodka substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic vodka's neutral profile.
  • Jägermeister Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic herbal liqueur or make an herbal tea concentrate with similar spices.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: Use an orange-flavored non-alcoholic syrup.
  • Whiskey Substitute: Try a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative or use strong black tea for depth.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

The standard recipe is vegan-friendly since it contains no animal products. Ensure that your sweet and sour mix is vegan (some commercial mixes may contain egg whites). If making your own sour mix, use sugar that hasn't been processed with bone char to keep it entirely vegan.

History and Origin of the Death Star Cocktail

Unlike some classic cocktails with long histories, the Death Star was invented more recently. This drink is an homage to the super weapon in Star Wars by bartender Alex Attart from the Greek restaurant Taverna Opa in Orlando. This cocktail stands out for its daring mix of spirits, making it a favorite among those looking for something different and adventurous.
