Notes
Substitutes:
- Brandy: You can use any type of brandy of your liking to make this recipe (Cognac, Armagnac, Applejack…). If you don't have any Brandy on hand, you can use bourbon as a substitute. It will give a different flavor profile but still make a delicious flip.
- Simple Syrup: If you're out of simple syrup, you can make your own by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat. Alternatively, honey syrup (2 parts honey to 1 part hot water) or vanilla syrup can be used for a different sweetness profile.
- Egg: Aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) is a common alternative to egg white, as they are often used in cocktails to create a frothy texture. In the case of the Flip, the egg yolk is also involved and its flavor can be hard to recreate. We suggest a few options in the section below, “Making it Vegan”.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Brandy Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic brandy substitute available in most supermarkets or online. If you’re feeling crafty, you can also make your own brandy substitute by infusing together rooibos tea and a bunch of spices of your liking (vanilla, cocoa beans and raisins are always a good way to start). Mix all the ingredients together, add hot water, cover and let it infuse for at least 3h (the stronger the better, so if you have time let it infuse overnight. In that case, you can either let it rest in the fridge once the liquid has cooled down). Give it a taste, adjust the spice level if necessary and strain it once you’re happy with the result. Stored properly (in an airtight container in the fridge), this “tea-brandy” can be kept for up to a week.
- Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular Brandy, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Egg Substitute: As mentioned above, aquafaba is an excellent vegan substitute for eggs in cocktails. It's also readily available if you eat chickpeas regularly. You can use a mix of aquafaba and pumpkin purée (approx. 2 tsp for 1 egg yolk) as a vegan alternative, but keep in mind that this will change the flavor of the drink greatly as the Bourbon Flip cocktail relies a lot on both the egg texture and taste.
- Simple Syrup: Ensure your syrup is made with vegan sugar (some sugars are processed using bone char). Alternatively, use agave nectar as a sweetener.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these vegan substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a vegan Brandy Flip.
What is a Brandy Flip?
A Brandy Flip is a cocktail made of Brandy, an egg, and sugar. This drink is relatively easy to make but requires some skill in mixing the ingredients properly to achieve the right consistency and flavor balance. The Brandy Flip is a variant of the classic “Flip” cocktail, which has been around since the 19th century.

What is a Brandy Flip made of – The ingredients
The following ingredients are necessary for a Brandy Flip:
- Brandy: The cocktail’s base spirit provides a rich, warming depth of flavor.
- Whole Egg: Adds creaminess and body to the drink, creating a smooth texture.
- Simple Syrup: Balances the Brandy’s strength with sweetness, enhancing the overall taste.
- Nutmeg: Used as a garnish, it adds an aromatic finish that complements the Brandy’s inherent spiciness.
