Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bacardi Rum
  • 6 oz Coca-Cola, to top up
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour 2 oz Bacardi Rum over the ice.
  • Top up the glass with approx. 6 oz Coca-Cola(adjusting to taste and to the size of the glass).
  • Garnish with a lime wedge if desired (you can either squeeze it into the drink or just place it as it is into the glass) and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Bacardi Rum: Any white or gold rum will do if you don't have Bacardi on hand. You could also try spiced rum or even a black rum for a different flavor profile.
  • Cola: Although the original recipe calls for Coca-Cola, any type and brand of cola works for this recipe. If you're not a fan of Cola, try using ginger ale or ginger beer for a lighter, spicier flavor.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Bacardi Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic rum substitute available in most supermarkets and do a good job mimicking the rum flavor. If you’re feeling crafty, you can also make your own dark rum substitute by infusing together rooibos tea and a bunch of spices of your liking (vanilla, cinnamon, clove, allspice and banana are always a good way to start). Mix all the ingredients together, add hot water, cover and let it infuse for at least 3h (the stronger the better, so if you have time let it infuse overnight. In that case, you can either let it rest in the fridge once the liquid has cooled down). Give it a taste, adjust the spice level if necessary and strain it once you’re happy with the result. Stored properly (in an airtight container in the fridge), this “tea-rum” can be kept for up to a week.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular Bacardi rum, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Your Cola: Most mainstream colas are vegan, but some boutique or specialty brands may use animal-derived ingredients. Always check the label to be sure.
  • Bacardi Rum: Bacardi rum is vegan-friendly, so no need to worry about finding a substitute here.
  • Proceed As Usual: Following the original steps and enjoy your vegan Bacardi and Cola once you've confirmed your Cola is vegan-friendly.

What is a Bacardi and Cola?

A Bacardi and Cola is a rum-based mixed drink made of Bacardi rum and Cola, typically garnished with a lime wedge. This cocktail is quite simple to make, requiring only the ability to measure ingredients and mix them in a glass.  One interesting fact about this drink is that, when it includes some lime juice in addition to the rum and cola, it’s often called “Cuba Libre,” which translates to “Free Cuba” – a phrase used during the Cuban War of Independence.

History and Origin

In 1862, Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, a Spanish wine merchant, started producing Bacardi rum after he bought a distillery in Santiago de Cuba. His unique method of distilling rum quickly gained popularity. However, it wasn’t until the Spanish-American War in 1898 that the Bacardi and Cola cocktail existed.

American soldiers stationed in Cuba developed a taste for local products, including Bacardi rum, during this war. As these soldiers introduced Coca-Cola to the island around the same time, it didn’t take long for someone to mix the two together. The result was a refreshing cocktail that perfectly combined the sweetness of Cola with the smoothness of Bacardi rum.
