  • Fresh oranges slice, for garnish, optional

  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Add Orange Slices: Add a few fresh orange slices into the pitcher.
  • Serve: Pour into individual wine or balloon glasses, filled with ice cubes or not depending on your preference. Garnish each glass with an extra orange slice and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: You can use white rum if you're out of vodka. It adds a different twist but keeps the drink smooth. You can also substitute it with more gin for a more botanical take on this cocktail.
  • Gin: If Gin isn't available, try using tequila for a unique spin on the cocktail. You can also substitute it with more vodka if you are not a fan of gin or simply would like something more neutral in flavor.
  • Fresh Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice is best, but store-bought works in a pinch. Just make sure it's pulp-free and not from concentrate for the best taste. If available, make sure to use Valencia oranges (Naranjas Valencia) to enjoy this cocktail's original taste!

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic vodka alternative; these are available and do a good job replicating vodka's neutral taste.
  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute to keep the botanical notes without the alcohol.
  • Cava Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic cava or sparkling wine, preferably “brut” or dry style.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

History and Origin of the Agua de Valencia

In 1959, a bartender, Constante Gil, created the Agua de Valencia cocktail at Café Madrid in Valencia, Spain, when he was asked for a twist on the classic “agua de Bilbao” (a Basque expression to designate cava). He mixed vodka, Gin, fresh Valencia orange juice, and of course, cava to craft a refreshing drink for his customers. The cocktail quickly gained popularity among locals and tourists and is still a must-try when visiting Valencia today.
