Notes
Substitutes:
- Baileys Irish Cream: You can use any other Irish cream liqueur if you don't have Baileys.
- Kahlua: You can use any brand of coffee liqueur you like to make this cocktail. For example, Tia Maria works well as an alternative to Kahlua. For a non-coffee option, try using a chocolate liqueur.
- Frangelico: For a nutty flavor, amaretto can be used instead of Frangelico, though it will slightly change the character.
- Honey Syrup: It’s really easy to make your own honey syrup at home. Simply mix together 2 parts honey and 1 part water in a saucepan, stir over low heat to dissolve, and let it cool down to room temperature before using. If you’re not a fan of honey or are in a rush, agave syrup or simple syrup can replace honey in a pinch.
- Heavy Cream: Half-and-half or even whole milk can be used for a lighter version.
Making a Pitcher of Toblerone Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 6 oz of Baileys, 6 oz of Kahlua, 6 oz of Frangelico, 4 oz of honey syrup, and 8 oz of heavy
- Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher. Add ice and stir well.
- Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into chilled Martini or coupe glasses, and garnish each glass with chocolate syrup and Toblerone chocolate shavings. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep it in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Baileys Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic Irish cream substitute. These are available on the market or can be prepared at home quite easily; there are plenty of recipes available online, including vegan ones.
- Kahlua Substitute: You can opt for a coffee syrup, either homemade or store-bought.
- Frangelico Substitute: Use hazelnut syrup instead of Frangelico for that nutty flavor without the alcohol.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Baileys Substitute: Use Baileys Almande or another vegan Irish cream alternative.
- Kahlua Substitute: Kahlua is not vegan-certified: you may want to switch to another brand of coffee liqueur, such as Tía Maria for example (this one is certified vegan-friendly).
- Frangelico Substitute: No need for that, Frangelico is already vegan-friendly!
- Honey Syrup Substitute: Replace honey with agave or maple syrup for a vegan-friendly option.
- Heavy Cream Substitute: Use a plant-based heavy cream to prepare this cocktail. Feel free to experiment: while some creams such as soy-based cream are rather neutral in flavors, others such as coconut or almond-based creams carry a more potent flavor that can bring an interesting twist to your drink!
