  • ½ oz soda water
  • Lemon slice or twist, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer
  • Coupe Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a coupe glass with ice to chill it. Give it a quick stir and set it aside.
  • Add Sugar and Lemon Juice: Sprinkle ½ teaspoon superfine sugar into the shaker. Add ¾ oz fresh lemon juice and stir to dissolve.
  • Add Triple Sec: Add 1 oz Triple Sec.
  • Add Tequila: Finally, add 2 oz Tequila to the mix.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Take the Coupe glass and discard the ice inside. Then, using both the cocktail strainer and the fine strainer, strain the shaken drink into the chilled glass.
  • Add Soda Water: Finish the drink by adding ½ oz soda water into the glass.
  • Garnish: Garnish with a lemon twist (express the lemon zest on top of the drink and then place it on the rim of the glass or drop it directly inside). Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you're out of Tequila, you can substitute white rum or vodka. Both will give you a different flavor profile but make a tasty cocktail.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lime juice can be used instead of lemon juice for a more tart flavor.
  • Sugar: Agave nectar or honey can be used for a different sweetness profile.

Making a Pitcher of Tequila Daisy:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Tequila, 8 teaspoons of sugar, 8 oz of Triple Sec, 6 oz of lemon juice, and 4 oz of simple syrup.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Tequila, Triple sec, lemon juice, and sugar with ice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled coupe glasses, top up with soda water, garnish with a lemon slice or twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available in the market and do a good job mimicking Tequila's flavor.
  • Triple Sec: use a simple syrup aromatized with orange peels.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of regular Tequila, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Sugar: Ensure your sugar is not processed using bone char, which is not vegan. Alternatively, use agave nectar as a vegan-friendly sweetener.

History and Origin of the Tequila Daisy

The story of the Tequila Daisy begins in Mexico, where Tequila was first produced in the 16th century. However, in the late 1800s, this spirit found its way into cocktails. Bartenders in Mexico and the United States started experimenting with Tequila, mixing it with various ingredients to create new and exciting drinks.

One such creation was the Tequila Daisy. Some believe it was born out of Prohibition in the United States. During this time, Americans traveled south to Mexico to enjoy alcohol freely. It’s likely that during these trips, they encountered and fell in love with tequila-based cocktails.
