  • Banana Liqueur: In a pinch, I've used a banana-flavored syrup. It's sweeter, so you should adjust the other ingredients.
  • Blackberry Liqueur: You can use blackberry syrup or even a raspberry liqueur if you need help finding blackberry liqueur.

Making a Pitcher of Rum Runner:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8.

Originating from the Florida Keys, this drink has become a staple in beachside bars and summer gatherings. The name pays homage to the smugglers during the Prohibition era, but you don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate its layered flavors.

What is the difference between a Hurricane and a Rum Runner?

First, A Hurricane typically uses light and dark rum, just like a Rum Runner, but some versions also add overproof rum for an extra kick. Second, the fruit juices differ. A Hurricane relies on passion fruit juice, while a Rum Runner combines orange and pineapple juices. Third, a Hurricane often includes lime juice for tartness, which isn’t a standard ingredient in a Rum Runner. Fourth, the Hurricane uses simple syrup or grenadine for sweetness, whereas a Rum Runner incorporates banana and blackberry liqueurs. Finally, the presentation can differ; a Hurricane is usually served in a curvy “hurricane glass,” while a Rum Runner often comes in a highball glass or tiki mug. Both drinks are tropical and delicious, but these differences set them apart.

Bacardi, Captain Morgan, and other Pre-made Rum Runner cocktails

Bacardi offers a pre-mixed version that’s spot-on. It’s made with quality rum and a balanced fruit flavor mix. It’s not too sweet or tart, just right for a quick tropical fix. Then there’s Captain Morgan, known for their spiced rum. Their take on the original cocktail leans into the spice, giving the drink a unique twist that fans of Captain Morgan will appreciate. Another well-known brand is Cutwater Spirits, which offers a canned drink that’s both flavorful and convenient.

If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with Bacardi. Their blend hits that sweet spot of being both authentic and convenient.

Frozen Rum Runner

A Frozen Rum Runner is a blended version of the classic cocktail. Instead of serving it over ice, you mix all the traditional ingredients like dark and light rum, banana liqueur, blackberry liqueur, and fruit juices in a blender with ice. The result is a smooth, slushy drink that’s incredibly refreshing on hot days.

Rum Runner Variations

Care to try something slightly different? Try one of our two recommendations:

  • Frozen Rum Runner: A refreshing blend of fruity flavors and icy texture makes this choice ideal for warm weather. It combines various rums, including dark or spiced types, for added complexity. Citrus and other fruit juices, like pineapple and orange, contribute to a tropical taste sensation. The frozen quality really brings out the fruitiness, creating a vacation-like experience in every sip.
  • Key West Rum Runner: Vibrant and colorful, this mix is known for its bright flavor profile. It often features grenadine for sweetness and striking color, with a hint of lime juice for a zesty contrast. The grenadine not only sweetens but also visually enhances the drink, while the lime juice adds a refreshing zesty balance, creating a perfect harmony of flavors.

History and Origins of the Rum Runner

The Rum Runner cocktail traces its roots to the Florida Keys in the late 1950s. Tiki culture was in full swing, and tropical cocktails were all the rage. The drink owes its name to the smugglers of the Prohibition era, who would transport illegal alcohol from the Caribbean to the United States. The original recipe was reportedly created at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada, Florida. The bartender at the time aimed to use up an excess inventory of rum and various fruit liqueurs, and the Rum Runner was the delicious result. Since then, the cocktail has gained popularity in Florida and in beachside bars and tropical destinations worldwide.
