Ingredients

  • 2 oz Gin
  • ¾ oz lemon juice
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Old Fashioned Glass

Instructions

  • Chill Glass: Stir some ice cubes into your Old Fashioned glass.
  • Add Bitters: Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters into the shaker.
  • Add Lemon Juice: Measure and pour ¾ oz lemon juice into the shaker.
  • Add Simple Syrup: Add ¾ oz simple syrup to the mix.
  • Add Gin: Pour 2 oz Gin into the shaker.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake Well: Shake the mixture well until chilled.
  • Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into your Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice.
  • Garnish: Place a lemon twist into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: If you don't have Gin, try using vodka for a cleaner taste. I've also used white rum for a different but enjoyable twist.
  • Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is best, but bottled lemon juice works in a pinch. Lime juice can also be an exciting alternative.
  • Simple Syrup: You can make your simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat. Honey syrup (honey mixed with water) adds a unique flavor, too.
  • Angostura Bitters: If you're out of Angostura bitters, try the orange or aromatic bitters you have on hand.

Making a Pitcher of Fitzgerald Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Gin, 6 oz of lemon juice, 6 oz of simple syrup, and 16 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic Gin's botanicals.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use the non-alcoholic gin substitute instead of regular Gin, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

History and Origin of the Fitzgerald Cocktail

The Fitzgerald Cocktail originated in the 1990s, created by bartender Dale DeGroff. Known as “King Cocktail,” DeGroff crafted this drink while working at the Rainbow Room in New York City. He aimed to create a simple yet elegant cocktail that highlighted the botanical flavors of Gin. The combination of lemon juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters provided a balanced and refreshing profile, making it an instant classic. This cocktail pays homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the famous author known for his love of Gin and sophisticated style.
