Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: If you don't have Gin, try using vodka for a cleaner taste or rum for a sweeter profile.
  • Triple Sec: Cointreau is a perfect substitute, or you can use Grand Marnier for a richer flavor.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lime juice can replace lemon juice if needed; it adds a slightly different but refreshing citrus note.
  • Grenadine: Pomegranate juice with a simple syrup can stand in for grenadine if you're out.
  • Egg White: I've used aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas) as an excellent vegan alternative for those who prefer not to use raw egg whites.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic Gin's botanicals.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: Opt for an orange-flavored non-alcoholic syrup.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Egg White Substitute: Use aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas) instead of egg white; it creates a similar frothy texture without animal products.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using aquafaba in place of egg white to make a vegan-friendly Boxcar drink.

History and Origin of the Boxcar Drink

The Boxcar drink cocktail first appeared in the 1940s. Bartenders created it during a time when gin-based cocktails were gaining popularity. The combination of Gin, triple sec, lemon juice, grenadine, and egg white made it stand out among other drinks. Its frothy texture and balanced flavors quickly earned it a place in classic cocktail recipes. While not as famous as some other cocktails from that era, the Boxcar drink has maintained a loyal following due to its unique taste and simple preparation.
