Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you don't have Tequila, try using white rum for a different twist. I've also used vodka in a pinch; it changes the flavor but works well.
  • Blue Curaçao: Triple Sec or Cointreau can replace Blue Curaçao if you prefer a less colorful drink but still want that orange flavor.
  • Lime Juice: Fresh lemon juice can be substituted for lime juice. It alters the taste slightly but keeps the citrusy kick.

Making a Pitcher of Blue Margarita:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher serving 8, multiply all ingredients by 8. Use 16 oz of Tequila, 8 oz of Blue Curaçao, 8 oz of lime juice, and 2 oz of simple syrup.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine Tequila, Blue Curaçao, lime juice, and simple syrup with ice cube Stir well to mix.
  • Serve: Strain into individual chilled margarita glasses and garnish each with a lime wedge.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila alternative; these are available and mimic Tequila's flavor profile reasonably well.
  • Blue Curaçao Substitute: Opt for blue food coloring mixed with orange-flavored syrup to maintain color and flavor without alcohol.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of regular ingredients and follow the original steps for a refreshing mocktail.

History and Origin

The Blue Margarita began as a colorful twist on the classic margarita, which started in Mexico. Bartenders decided to create this vibrant version by adding Blue Curaçao, a liqueur made from the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit found on the island of Curaçao. This addition gave the drink its striking blue color and introduced a sweet orange flavor that matched well with the traditional lime and tequila base. People quickly embraced the Blue Margarita in bars and restaurants for its eye-catching look and refreshing taste, making it a popular choice for those wanting a fun variation of the classic margarita.
