Notes
Substitutes:
- Añejo Tequila: If you don't have añejo tequila on hand, you can use reposado tequila for a slightly less aged flavor. I've also used bourbon as a substitute for a different twist.
- Amontillado Sherry: Fino sherry can be used if you prefer a lighter, drier profile. It's not as rich but still adds complexity.
- Eggnog Base: You can use Advocaat liqueur, it will add a different texture but it will do in a pinch.
Making a Pitcher of Añogo Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of añejo tequila, 8 oz of amontillado sherry, and 24 oz of eggnog base.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the tequila, sherry, and eggnog base. Add ice and stir well.
- Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into individual ice-filled rocks or old fashioned glasses. Garnish with an orange peel and serve immediately. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) as the eggnog base contains both eggs and dairy.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Añejo Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available and do a decent job mimicking tequila's flavor. Otherwise, you can use fresh orange juice as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
- Amontillado Sherry Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic sherry or dry vermouth substitute or make a simple syrup infused with toasted almonds and/or walnut to bring some nuttiness to the cocktail.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Eggnog Base Substitute: To make this cocktail vegan, replace the traditional eggnog base with a vegan version. You can find pre-made vegan eggnog in stores or make your own using plant-based milk, sugar, and a bit of nutmeg for flavor. Follow the rest of the recipe as usual.
What is an Añogo Cocktail?
An Añogo Cocktail is a tequila-based winter cocktail made of añejo tequila, amontillado sherry, eggnog base, and orange peel. This twist on the classic Eggnog is relatively easy to make as it only requires mixing the ingredients in the proper proportions. The use of aged tequila and sherry gives this cocktail depth, while the creamy eggnog base adds a richness that makes it perfect for colder months.
