What is the difference between Blue Hawaii cocktail and Blue Hawaiian?

While similar in name and color, the Blue Hawaii and the Blue Hawaiian have distinct differences. The Blue Hawaii mixes light rum, vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and sweet and sour, offering a clear and vibrant drink. In contrast, the Blue Hawaiian incorporates the cream of coconut, creating a creamier texture and a richer flavor profile.

Creating a non-alcoholic or “virgin” Blue Hawaii is easy and retains much of the refreshing, tropical appeal of the original. Start by skipping the light rum and vodka and replacing them with non-alcoholic substitutes, available in many grocery stores, to maintain the flavor profile. For the signature blue color and a hint of citrus, non-alcoholic blue curaçao is a great option. Mix it with the usual pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix.

History and Origins of the Blue Hawaii Cocktail

The Blue Hawaii cocktail has a colorful history and origin, tracing back to 1957 in Waikiki, Hawaii. Harry Yee, a legendary bartender at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, created this cocktail. The story goes that a representative from Bols, a liqueur producer, approached Harry Yee and asked him to design a drink that featured their blue curaçao, a blue liqueur. Eager to rise to the challenge, Harry Yee mixed blue curaçao with pineapple juice, sweet and sour mix, vodka, and light rum, creating a visually striking and flavorful cocktail. He then garnished it with a pineapple slice and a cherry, adding to its tropical appeal. The name “Blue Hawaii” is linked to reportedly inspired by the 1961 Elvis Presley film of the same name, further popularizing the cocktail and solidifying its place in cocktail history.
