Substitutes:
- Patrón Reposado: If you don't have Patrón Reposado, you can use any good-quality reposado tequila. I've also tried it with añejo tequila for a richer flavor profile.
- Orgeat: Almond syrup works well if you can't find Orgeat, though it might be slightly sweeter; adjust to taste.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is best, but bottled lime juice can work in a pinch.
- Orange Liqueur: If you are out of any orange liqueur, use an orange-flavored syrup.
- Pineapple Juice: Use orange juice for a different twist.
Making a Pitcher of Pan de Muertos Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 12 oz of Patrón Reposado, 4 oz of Orgeat, 6 oz of lime juice, 4 oz of orange liqueur, and 8 oz of pineapple juice.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Patrón Reposado, Orgeat, lime juice, orange liqueur, and pineapple juice. Stir well.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled highball glasses, garnish with caramelized orange wedges and pineapple leaves, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic tequila's flavor.
- Orange Liqueur Substitute: Opt for an orange-flavored syrup or non-alcoholic triple sec.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Orgeat Substitute: Ensure your orgeat syrup is vegan-friendly; some brands may use honey or other animal products.
- Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using vegan-friendly ingredients to enjoy a vegan version of this cocktail.
