  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Chill Glass: First, chill your cocktail glass.
  • Add Vermouth: Pour ½ oz Dry Vermouth into a shaker.
  • Add Vodka: Measure and pour 1½ oz Vodka into the shaker.
  • Shake Well: Fill your shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
  • Strain: Fine-strain the mixture into your chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish: Add a lemon twist for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Vodka: If you're out of vodka, you can use gin for a more botanical flavor. I've also tried white rum for a sweeter profile.
  • Dry Vermouth: I've used sweet Vermouth before if you don't have dry vermouth. It changes the character of the drink but still works well.

Making a Pitcher of Kangaroo Drink:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 12 oz of vodka and 4 oz of dry vermouth.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the vodka and dry vermouth with ice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into individual chilled cocktail glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Vodka Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic vodka substitute; these are available and do an excellent job mimicking vodka's neutral flavor.
  • Vermouth Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic vermouth or make a simple syrup infused with bitterness from gentian root and with a dash of grapefruit juice.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Your Brands: Most vodka and vermouth brands are already vegan, but it's always good to double-check. Some brands may use animal products in their filtration process.
  • Proceed As Usual: After confirming your vegan-friendly brands, follow the original steps and enjoy your vegan Kangaroo drink.
