Ingredients

  • oz Gin - preferably London Dry
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 slices of fresh ginger - peeled
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • 3 oz ginger beer - to top up
  • Mint sprig & icing sugar - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer
  • Muddler
  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Bar spoon or long stirrer

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a Highball glass with ice cubes. Give it a stir to chill it and set it aside.
  • Prep Shaker: Place 2 slices of fresh ginger into the shaker and add ¾ oz simple syrup. Muddle well to extract the flavor of the ginger.
  • Add Mint: Add 6-8 fresh mint leaves into the shaker.
  • Add Lime Juice: Add ¾ oz fresh lime juice.
  • Add Gin: Add 1¾ oz Gin into the shaker as well.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Remove the ice in the highball glass and refill it with fresh, new ice cubes. Then, using both the cocktail strainer and fine strainer, strain the drink into the ice-filled glass.
  • Add Ginger Beer: Top up with approx. 3 oz ginger beeradjust to taste and to the size of the glass). Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish: Garnish with a mint sprig sprinkled with some icing sugar and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Gin: If you're out of Gin, vodka can be a good substitute, as it's neutral and won't alter the flavor profile too much.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: If fresh limes aren't available, bottled lime juice can work in a pinch, but it may slightly alter the taste. Fresh lemon juice can also do the trick.
  • Simple Syrup: You can make your simple syrup at home by mixing together equal parts of sugar and water over low heat. Agave syrup or honey syrup (two parts honey to one part warm water) can also be used as a substitute.
  • Ginger Beer: If you can't find ginger beer, ginger ale can be used as a substitute. It's sweeter and less spicy, but it'll do the job.
  • Fresh Ginger: If you don’t have fresh ginger on hand or simply want to try a different version of this recipe, you can omit the ginger and simple syrup and use ginger liqueur (or ginger syrup for a lighter version) instead.

Making a Pitcher of Gin-Gin Mule:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 14 oz of Gin, 8 6 oz of fresh lime juice, 6 oz of simple syrup, 4-5 handfuls of fresh mint leaves, 16 slices of fresh ginger, and approximately 24 oz of ginger beer.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the ginger slices and simple syrup. Muddle well to extract the flavor. Add the Gin, lime juice, and mint leaves: make sure to smack them between your hands before in order to release their aroma. Stir well and let it rest for 10-15 minutes for the flavors to infuse.
  • Serve: Add ice and stir well. Strain to remove the ice and the bits of mint and ginger, pour into ice-filled highball glasses, and top up with chilled ginger beer. Garnish each glass with a mint sprig and serve immediately. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Gin Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic gin substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic Gin's botanicals.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

This cocktail is already vegan-friendly as it doesn't contain any animal products. Ensure your simple syrup is made with vegan-friendly sugar as some sugars are processed using bone char (if you’re in doubt, unrefined and organic sugars are usually the safest options).
