Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you're out of Tequila, I've found that mezcal adds a smoky twist to the drink, which can be delightful.
  • Lime Juice: In a pinch, lemon juice is an alternative, though it slightly changes the flavor profile.
  • Simple Syrup: You can make your own by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat or use agave syrup for a different sweetness.
  • Red Wine: A fruity red wine like Merlot or Shiraz works best, but I've also used rosé for a lighter touch.

Making a Pitcher of Devil's Margarita:

  • Scale: To serve 8, multiply all ingredients by 8—16 oz of Tequila, 8 oz of lime juice, 4 oz of simple syrup, and 4 oz of red wine.
  • Mix: Combine Tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup in a large pitcher with ice and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain into individual chilled coupe glasses, float red wine on top, garnish with lime wheels, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila alternative; these are available and mimic the flavor without alcohol.
  • Red Wine Substitute: Opt for non-alcoholic red wine or grape juice with a splash of cranberry for tartness.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using these substitutes for a non-alcoholic version.
