Ingredients

  • 1 oz Tequila Anejo
  • ½ oz Mezcal
  • ¾ oz Amaro Averna
  • ½ oz Elderflower liqueur
  • 2 dashes of grapefruit bitters
  • Grapefruit zest, for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Stirred Coupe Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Chill your coupe glass by filling it with ice cubes.
  • Add Bitters: Add 2 dashes of grapefruit bitters to a mixing glass.
  • Add Elderflower Liqueur: Pour in ½ oz Elderflower liqueur.
  • Add Amaro Averna: Add ¾ oz Amaro Averna to the mix.
  • Add Mezcal: Measure and pour ½ oz Mezcal into the mixing glass.
  • Add Tequila Anejo: Pour 1 oz Tequila Anejo into the mixing glass.
  • Stir Gently: Add Ice cubes and use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently until well chilled.
  • Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into the chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish: Place a grapefruit zest twist on the rim for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila Anejo: If you don't have Tequila Anejo, you can use Reposado tequila for a slightly lighter flavor profile. I've also tried bourbon as an alternative, which adds a different but pleasant twist.
  • Mezcal: If you are out of mezcal, try using a smoky Scotch whisky instead; it provides a similar depth without overpowering the drink.
  • Amaro Averna: If you can't find Amaro Averna, substitute with another dark amaro like Amaro Montenegro or even Fernet Branca for a more herbal note.
  • Elderflower Liqueur: St-Germain is my go-to, but if unavailable, you can use a floral syrup like lavender or rose syrup for a different but delightful flavor.
  • Grapefruit Bitters: Orange bitters work well if you still need grapefruit bitters on hand.

Making a Pitcher of Midnight Bouquet Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of Tequila Anejo, 4 oz of Mezcal, 6 oz of Amaro Averna, 4 oz of Elderflower liqueur, and about 16 dashes of Grapefruit bitters.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Tequila Anejo, Mezcal, Amaro Averna, Elderflower liqueur, and Grapefruit bitters. Stir well with ice until chilled.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled coupe glasses, garnish each with grapefruit zest, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available and mimic the flavor quite well.
  • Mezcal Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic smoky spirit or use a dash of liquid smoke mixed with water to get that smoky essence.
  • Amaro Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic amaro or make your own by infusing herbal tea with sweetener and spices.
  • Elderflower Liqueur Substitute: Use elderflower syrup instead of liqueur.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using these non-alcoholic substitutes to enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
