Ingredients

  • oz Spanish Brandy
  • 1 oz chilled black tea
  • 1 oz aniseed liqueur, originally Anis del Mono Dulce
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • Lemon zest twist, for garnish

Equipment

  • Coupe or Martini Glass
  • Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a Martini or Coupe glass with ice. Give it a quick stir and set it aside.
  • Add Simple Syrup: Pour ½ oz simple syrup into the shaker.
  • Add Black Tea: Add 1 oz chilled black tea.
  • Add Aniseed Liqueur: Add 1 oz aniseed liqueur.
  • Add Brandy: Finally, measure and pour 1½ oz Spanish Brandy into the shaker as well.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it, and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Take the Coupe or Martini glass and discard the ice inside. Then, using both the cocktail strainer and the fine strainer, strain the shaken drink into the chilled glass.
  • Garnish: Garnish with a lemon zest twist: to do so, express the lemon zest on top of the glass (you can either discard it after or place it on the rim of the glass for an added citrus touch). Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Black Tea: If you don't have black tea, try to use green tea for a lighter flavor profile.
  • Spanish Brandy: You can substitute Spanish brandy with any good-quality brandy you have on hand. Cognac works well, too.
  • Anise liqueur: If you can't find anise liqueur, opt for Pernod or absinthe for a similar taste.
  • Simple syrup: Try honey or agave syrup instead of simple syrup for a different sweetness.

Making a Pitcher of Longines Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of cold black tea, 12 oz of Spanish brandy, 4 oz of anisette liqueur, and 4 oz of simple syrup.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the cold tea, Spanish brandy, anisette, and simple syrup with ice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled cocktail glasses, garnish with spiral-cut lemon peels, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Brandy Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic brandy substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic the brandy's flavor.
  • Anisette Substitute: For that licorice flavor, opt for a non-alcoholic anisette or make a simple syrup infused with star anise and fennel seeds.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Sugar Substitute: To keep it vegan-friendly, ensure you use vegan sugar or replace it with agave syrup or maple syrup.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using these vegan substitutes to enjoy a vegan version of the Longines Cocktail.

History and Origin of the Longines Cocktail

Created around the 1930’s by famous bartender Costante Ribalaigua Vert, owner of La Floridita in Cuba. The Longines Cocktail became a favorite for those looking for a refined yet simple drink. Traditionally made with Anis del Mono, another Spanish product, this mix of Spanish flavor with black tea and sugar stands out from many other cocktails.
