Notes
Substitutes:
- Tequila: If you don't have Reposado Tequila, any other can of Tequila can be used to make this cocktail. You can also try using Mezcal for a smokier, more potent twist.
- Kahlua: If you're out of Kahlua, try using another coffee liqueur like Tia Maria or Espresso Borghetti.
- Mole Bitters: You can substitute them for classic Angostura bitters or chocolate/cacao bitters. If you don’t have any bitters on hand, you can simply omit this step.
Making a Pitcher of Brave Bull:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Reposado Tequila, 8 oz of Kahlua, and 16 dashes of Mole bitters.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Tequila, Kahlua, and bitters. Stir well.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; several brands are available that mimic Tequila's flavor quite well. Otherwise, you can use fresh orange juice as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic, and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
- Kahlua Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic coffee-flavored syrup or make your own by combining strong brewed coffee with sugar and reducing it on the stove.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Kahlua Substitute: Regular Kahlua is not vegan as it contains sugar that may be processed with bone char. Opt for a vegan coffee liqueur, like Tia Maria, Espresso Borghetti (there are of course plenty of others).
What is a Brave Bull?
A Brave Bull is a tequila-based cocktail made of three simple ingredients: Reposado Tequila, coffee liqueur, typically Kahlua, and some bitters. The Brave Bull is simple to make despite its robust flavor profile.
The simplicity of this drink’s composition does not compromise on taste as it offers a unique blend that combines the earthy flavors of Tequila with the sweet notes from the coffee liqueur.
What is a Brave Bull made of – The ingredients
To put together a Brave Bull, use these ingredients:
- Reposado Tequila: This is the primary spirit in a Brave Bull cocktail. It provides the strong, robust flavor that defines the drink.
- Kahlua: A coffee-flavored liqueur from Mexico. It adds a sweet, rich depth to the cocktail and complements the Tequila’s boldness.
- Mole Bitters: Those bitters, made out of cacao, cinnamon & a blend of other spices, give an extra kick to the drink and bring in some warmth and spiciness, complementing both the Tequila and the coffee.
- Ice: Used to chill the cocktail and dilute the strong flavors slightly, making it more palatable.
- Lemon zest (Optional): Some people like garnering their Brave Bull with a lemon peel. It adds a touch of freshness and can help balance out the sweetness of the Kahlua.
