  • Fresh apple slice, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Martini or Coupe Glass
  • Stirring Glass
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a Martini or Coupe glass with ice. Give it a stir to chill it and set it aside.
  • Add Vermouth: Pour ¾ oz sweet vermouth into the mixing glass.
  • Add Calvados: Measure and pour ¾ oz Calvados into the mixing glass as well.
  • Add Light Rum: Finally, add 1½ oz light rum to the mix.
  • Add Ice and Stir: Fill the mixing glass with ice. Using a bar spoon or a long stirrer, stir well (for about 15-20 seconds). Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary.
  • Strain: Take your Martini glass or cocktail coupe and discard the ice inside. Using the cocktail strainer, strain the mixture into the chilled glass.
  • Garnish: Garnish with fresh apple slices and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Rum: You can use dark rum as an alternative to light rum in this recipe. If you don't have rum at all, you can use brandy for a different but still rich flavor.
  • Calvados: Applejack works well as a substitute if you can't find Calvados. It has a similar apple essence but is more readily available.
  • Sweet Vermouth: You can use any brand of sweet vermouth you like to make this cocktail. If you can’t find any, any kind of red vermouth will work as well. You could also try a fortified wine like port or sherry (Oloroso, Palo Cortado or Pedro Ximenez for example) for a different flavor profile.

Making a Pitcher of Bolero Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 12 oz of light rum, 6 oz of Calvados, and 6 oz of Strucchi Rosso Vermouth.
  • Mix: Combine the rum, Calvados, and Sweet Vermouth in a large pitcher. Add ice and stir well. Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary. Strain to remove the ice and transfer it into a bottle.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into chilled martini or coupe glasses, garnish with a fresh slice of apple, and serve immediately. Be sure to put the bottle back into the fridge between each serving. If you have any leftovers, you can keep the bottle in the fridge for up to three months.

Making it Vegan:

The Bolero Cocktail is naturally vegan as long as you use vegan-certified spirits. Always check labels to ensure no animal products are used in filtration: most distilled spirits such as Calvados and rum are vegan, but some ingredients or materials of animal origin are sometimes used when producing fermented beverages such as vermouth.
