Ingredients
- 1 oz Bourbon
- 1 oz Cognac
- 1 bar spoon grenadine
- 3 dashes of Peychaud's Bitters
- 1 dashes Angostura Bitters
- Ice cubes
- Lemon zest twist - for garnish, optional
Equipment
- Old Fashioned Glass
- Measuring Jigger
- Mixing Glass
- Cocktail Strainer
- Stirrer or Bar Spoon
Instructions
- Prep Glass: Fill an Old Fashioned glass with ice. Give it a quick stir and set it aside.
- Add Bitters: Pour 1 dashes Angostura Bitters and 3 dashes of Peychaud's Bitters into the mixing glass.
- Add Grenadine: Measure and pour 1 bar spoon grenadine into the mixing glass.
- Add Bourbon: Add 1 oz Bourbon.
- Add Cognac: Finally, add 1 oz Cognac to the mix.
- Add Ice and Stir: Fill the mixing glass with ice. Using a bar spoon or a long stirrer, stir well (for about 15-20 seconds). Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary.
- Strain: Take your Old Fashioned glass and discard the ice inside. Using the cocktail strainer, strain the mixture into the chilled glass (do not add ice cubes: his cocktail is served neat, meaning without ice).
- Garnish: Garnish with a lemon zest twist (to do so, express the lemon zest on top of the drink and then place it on the rim of the glass or drop it directly inside). Serve immediately.
Notes
Substitutes:
- Bourbon: You can use rye whiskey for a spicier kick if you don't have bourbon. I've also tried dark rum, which adds a different but pleasant flavor profile.
- Cognac: Other brandies such as Armagnac or even Applejack work well if you don't have cognac on hand. It maintains the drink's rich, smooth character.
- Grenadine: If needed, pomegranate juice with simple syrup can replace Grenadine. This keeps the sweetness level and color intact.
- Peychaud’s Bitters: If you're out of Peychaud's Bitters, you can use a dash of white absinthe on your cocktail or rinse your cocktail with absinthe before pouring in the drink. One nice and practical way of doing so is to transfer a bit of absinthe into a spray bottle, so you can simply spray the inside of the glass 2-3 times right before serving.
- Angostura Bitters: If you’re out of Angostura bitters, you can replace it with other aromatic bitters such as cocoa or orange bitters for a different twist. Just make sure to use bitters that are not too sweet and that are heavy on the spices.
Making a Pitcher of Black Rose Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of bourbon, 8 oz of cognac, and 1,5 oz of grenadine, along with 24 dashes of Peychaud's and 8 dashes of Angostura Bitters.
- Mix: Combine the bourbon, cognac, Grenadine, and bitters in a large pitcher. Add ice and stir well. Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary. Strain to remove the ice and transfer it into a bottle.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into chilled Old Fashioned or rocks glasses, garnish with a lemon zest twist, and serve immediately. Be sure to put the bottle back into the fridge or freezer between each serving: cocktails such as this one should always be served as cold as possible. If you have any leftovers, you can keep the bottle in the fridge or freezer for up to a year.
Making it Vegan:
The Black Rose Cocktail is naturally vegan if you ensure your Grenadine is free from animal products (some commercial brands may use cochineal for coloring). Always check labels to confirm. Enjoy crafting your perfect Black Rose Cocktail! What is a Black Rose Cocktail?
