What better way to explore a city than by getting recommendations from those who call it home? We asked locals of the Big Apple—New York City—to share the places they consider sacred, where friendships are forged and memories are made.
These bars might not be highlighted in international competitions or featured on every travel blog, but if you want to experience the authentic Barcelona, these are the spots you can’t miss.
Here are the top bars in New York City, each catering to a unique personality type:
Split Eights
“Split Eights in NYC is the perfect vibrant cocktail lounge in the evening. As night falls, Split Eights truly shines as a hidden gem, with deliciously crafted cocktails that hit the spot—especially their espresso martinis, which are an absolute must-try. No matter the time of day, this place has a welcoming vibe. Since it’s on the smaller side, I’d definitely recommend making a reservation to secure your spot.”
Employees Only
“An elegant speakeasy in the West Village known for its craft cocktails and sophisticated atmosphere, Employees Only is perfect for a more intimate and exclusive night out.
The atmosphere is more sophisticated, and every visit feels special, from the perfectly crafted cocktails to the true speakeasy ambiance that transports you to another era. It’s the perfect place for an elegant and memorable night out.”
Rudy’s Bar & Grill
“It’s an iconic spot in Hell’s Kitchen, famous for its authentic vibe and legendary free hot dogs. It has that authentic, laid-back vibe where you feel right at home, with friendly people and those free hot dogs that always bring a smile to your face—and as a bonus, it’s budget-friendly.”
And according to its website, “Rudy’s got one of New York’s first liquor licenses when prohibition ended in 1933.”
The Portrait Bar

“If you’re looking for something a bit different, The Portrait Bar is a unique venue that offers a refined setting with artistic décor, making it a great spot to enjoy a creative cocktail while soaking in the ambiance.
Its artistic setting and visual focus, where you can enjoy a cocktail while stimulating your senses, leaving you wanting to explore more.”
The Coby Club
“Coby Club in NYC is one of those rare gems where the atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit. The aesthetic is absolutely stunning, blending an old-school lounge vibe with touches of modern elegance. The cocktails are not only delicious, but strong and carefully crafted, perfect for starting—or ending—your night on a high note.
On top of that, the small bites are spot-on, complementing the drinks perfectly. But what truly sets Coby Club apart is the live entertainment; every night from 9-11pm, you’re treated to either an alluring burlesque show or a soulful jazz set, making each visit feel like a special occasion. Make sure you make a reservation and enjoy a night out with your girls, date night or enjoying the vibes solo!”
Selva
“Selva is a beer and wine bar and always has good music playing. For being relatively new, (they opened this year) it’s not always crowded even though they’re in the heart of Bushwick. Since they don’t sell food I usually go to the donuts shop by the side (Dromedary Doughnuts) to eat something…” (see below for surprise…)
“They’re not only a bar, but I’d say a “cultural center” cause there’s always a cool event happening put together from people all around the world. They also have a little gallery and sell rare vinyls.”
Ra Ra Rhino
A bonus!—”If you go to the Dromedary Doughnuts beside Selva, you’ll discover that they also have a hidden bar (Ra Ra Rhino) when you go inside the ‘Photo Booth.’
You’ll be welcomed with a giant pink Rhinoceros head, as well as delectable drinks that are carefully individually concocted. An experience to complement your evening in Bushwick.”
Hunterian
“Here you’ll find a small neighborhood cocktail bar completely off the beaten path in the Upper East Side. It’s frequented by locals, young professionals and the residents of the Weill Cornell medical complex, it serves great cocktails in a very quiet part of town.
Not overly-hyped (i.e. no need for reservations and long wait queues), but well worth a visit if you are in the area.”
Little Branch
“Less of a small neighborhood spot, Little Branch is still an institution in the West Village that is iconic (though with the hype, it is quite busy most times!).
That being said, it has a great feel to it and one of my more favorite bars, especially in the West Village. Great for after dinner drinks in the area, though per the above, I would plan ahead.”
